At the west switch of Plain, just outside the east portal of Tunnel 2, the eastbound Zephyr knocked down a green signal. The train is moving along at 25 MPH due to a slow order. However, just ahead, the train will be able to pick back up to track speed.

The eastbound Zephyr passes by Tunnel 28. Or, more accurately, what is left of Tunnel 28! The tunnel daylighted decades ago due to numerous cave-ins and general structural issues. The tracks follow along South Boulder Creek all the way east to Tunnel 8, when the tracks turn to the south.

The eastbound Zephyr, running about 45 minutes late, emerges from the east portal of Tunnel 29. At only 78 feet in length, Tunnel 29 is about the same length as one of Amtrak's Superliners. When riding the Zephyr, I would always tell my daughters "don't blink or you'll miss it"!

The eastbound Zephyr crosses over South Boulder Creek just west of the shortest tunnel in the Tunnel District. Tunnel 29 is only 78 feet long. This area essentially marks the start of the Tunnel District as trains head east from Cliff.

This westbound oil train is slowing to a stop in the siding at Tolland. It has cleared the east switch, and will stop before blocking the grade crossing. The train will have to wait here for two eastbounds. The first is the Zephyr, and the second is a fellow BNSF train (the Provo-Denver). The crew on the Provo-Denver is running short on time, so the dispatcher is trying to keep them moving.

Six engines that I happened to see at BNSF's Engine House in Denver this morning are now headed west on a unit oil train, crossing over South Boulder Creek between Rollins and Tolland. The train will head into the siding at Tolland for a meet with the eastbound Zephyr.

Not far east of the east switch of Sulphur, US-40 crosses over the tracks, going from the south side to the north side. You can see the overpass in the distance, as the Canyon Spirit continues the journey east to Denver. This is the first time I have shot an eastbound from this angle through here.

After an extraordinarily dry winter, the Colorado River is running rather low through Byers Canyon right now. UP 4296 and UP 4519 are the (temporary) power on the Canyon Spirit. The units are filling in for the typical GP40-3s, which are currently getting repairs done after striking a truck in Rifle, CO several weeks ago.

Just east of the east switch of Flat, the eastbound Canyon Spirit is moving along at about 55 MPH, several dozen feet above US-40, which is down at to the left, out of the frame. The SD70Ms that the Canyon Spirit are borrowing from Union Pacific don't necessarily look the best, but it is great that they have an option available so the train can continue to run.

At the intermediate signal between Gore and Troublesome, the eastbound Canyon Spirit is on the move with a green signal. A few weeks back, the train struck an oil tar truck in Rifle, CO, damaging the two Canyon Spirit GP40-3s. Until repairs on those have been completed, the train is leasing two SD70Ms from Union Pacific.

The signal bridge at Utah Jct is one of the few-remaining Rio Grande (or, really Denver and Salt Lake) era signal bridges / searchlight signals still on the former Grande. The morning Zephyr passes underneath the bridge on the main track, headed west.
