The long days of summer are great for having plenty of daylight to try to find trains, but the sun resting almost directly straight up in the sky results in short shadows. Black and white, with a bit of a contrast bump, actually can be quite helpful. Note the Denver skyline in the distance and the Rocky Mountains even further off in the distance as a northbound UP manifest approaches.

After passenger trains, the second most difficult train to get ahead of is definitely a Z-Train! I was able to set up for this shot just south of Platteville, with four GEs on the point. But this would be the last shot I was able to get prior to the train arriving in Denver.

UP 8205 and train have a clear (green) signal on the main at the south switch of La Salle. You may note that there is a derail set on the siding here. That is due to a local that is currently in the siding and switching out cars at the yard in La Salle.

Not too far north of Nunn on the Greeley Sub, a quartet of GEs has this southbound Z-Train on the move at track speed. Since PSR (Precision Scheduled Railroading) has somewhat taken over several railroads, there are more "mixed" trains. Case-in-point is this Z-Train which has many auto racks on the front, and traditional stacks and pigs on the rear.

UP 8205, leading the ZLBDV-12, knocks down a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal at the north end of Carr, heading in to the siding. The northbound train that is being met is already between switches on the main. Should be just another few weeks and the trees here will have their leaves back for the summer.

A northbound coal empty holds the main track at Carr, CO. The train is ultimately headed for the Black Thunder Mine in the Power River Basin in Wyoming. The train is currently holding for a southbound Z-Train that is just minutes away from the north switch.

At the very north end of the Greeley Subdivision, this Z-Train is starting to head toward Denver after a crew change at Speer. The train is passing underneath I-25 just south of Speer Jct. The train you see above in the distance is indeed the back part of this same train.

A long string of empty well cars, led by a BNSF C44-9W, approaches the grade crossing at York Street at the north end of UP's 36th Street Yard. The tracks pass by a Purina pet food plant, kicking up some steam, on the way in.

At the south switch of Hazeltine, BNSF 4664 and baretable train cross 104th Avenue on the main train. The siding is currently "plugged" with a string of empty auto racks. New cars were brought in and unloaded at UP's auto facility in Denver, named Rolla. After unloading, the cars are placed on the siding so they can head north.

A long string of empty well cars is led by a single BNSF C44-9W on the main at Hazeltine. The train is passing by a long string of empty auto racks that, later in the afternoon, will head north as the ARLLDR-07.

A BNSF C44-9W has a long string of empty well cars south on the Greeley Sub. A storm front is starting to creep its way over the top of the Colorado Rockies. It is expected to dump around 4" of snow overnight leading in to tomorrow.

Baretable trains...which are trains that have empty well cars used for hauling (intermodal) containers...are some of the lowest priority trains on any railroad. They do not generate any revenue as the railroad is just relocating the empty cars. A single power-shared BNSF C44-9W is the power on this southbound, getting ready to leave the siding at Platteville.

A UP conductor from on the southbound baretable gives a roll by to the northbound North Yard, CO to Green River, WY. Many of the cars on the northbound manifest are likely headed for Salt Lake City, and once would have run over the Moffat on the MNYRO. But it is has been several years since the MNYRO ran.

The conductor on a southbound baretable is on the ground to give a "roll by" to the northbound manifest that just knocked down the signal at the south end of Platteville. The southbound baretable is in fact a UP train, even though it is led by a BNSF C44-9W.
