Just west of Tunnel 1, the five-car Winter Park Express is making track speed as it tries to make up some time after departing Union Station 20 minutes late. It was ready to depart just as the Zephyr was arriving and backing into Track 4. Fortunately, there are no further delays to be had ahead, and it'll arrive at Winter Park three minutes early!

I had planned to chase the train further west, but when I stopped for this shot, I discovered I picked up a screw in my tire and the tire was totally flat. So, changing the tire took catching up to the Ski Train out of reach.

The Winter Park Express is throttling up as it passes through the OS at the west switch of Eisele (Clay). Note the orange bag that is covering the coupler on the front of AMTK 75. This bag is to prevent snow and ice from building up on the coupler and in the knuckle. This is because the power must run around the train at Fraser. AMTK 75 will be the trailing unit for the journey east.

The first run of the Winter Park Express meets BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest, waiting in the siding at Rocky. With the Ski Train now clear of the east switch of Rocky, DS-380 is already setting up a signal for the manifest to depart eastbound and continue in to Denver.

The Winter Park Express is kicking off the season with four coaches and a lounge car. AMTK 75 and AMTK 146 are providing the power. Tickets for the train are about 50% of what they were last year, thanks to some subsidization by the Colorado government. After Christmas, two additional coaches will come to Denver to be added to the train.

It is a sunny and relatively warm December morning for the first run of Amtrak's Winter Park Express Ski Train. For the first time since the Anschutz Ski Train, the regular season is starting in December (before Christmas) instead of in January.

In an unusual move, the westbound Zephyr has a trio of P42DCs on this particular morning, with AMTK 79 (Phase 7) on the point, followed by AMTK 207 and AMTK 168. All three units are elephant-style. Incidentally, within a month or so, Siemens Chargers are likely to start showing up on the Zephyr. Solid sets of P42s may be nearing an end.

The last coach on the eastbound Zephyr left the frame during this timed exposure, creating the ghostly view on Track 4. Meanwhile, the equipment for the Winter Park Express (Ski Train), which includes a pair of P42DCs, sits peacefully on Track 5. In less than 36 hours, the train will depart for its first run of the season. Amtrak has worked the government of Colorado to add more dates to the season. Additionally, the government of Colorado is subsidizing the cost of tickets, reducing the overall price for passengers in an effort to increase demand.

A coach car on the eastbound Zephyr, pulling out of Union Station on Track 4, passes by the Winter Park Express (Ski Train), just set out by the Zephyr on Track 5. AMTK 75, which was repainted in the Phase 7 paint scheme earlier this year, will be one of the two P42DCs on the train.

After 2 1/2 hours of work setting out the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) and performing its own station stop, the eastbound Zephyr is getting very close to departing from Track 4 and continuing east to Chicago. The Winter Park Express, meanwhile, sits on Track 5, waiting for its first run of the season in less than 36 hours.

Using an 11mm wide angle lens, I set up for this shot of a pair of P42DCs, sitting next to each other on tracks 4 and 5 and Denver Union Station. AMTK 78, on Track 4, is leading the eastbound California Zephyr. AMTK 75, on Track 5, is leading the Winter Park Express for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, the eastbound Zephyr is stopped on Track 4, getting refueled and also going through its mechanical checks and air tests before completing its station stop and continuing east toward Chicago.

The Winter Park Express (Ski Train) is stopped on Track 5 at Denver Union Station, ready to start the season. For the first time, the regular season of the train will start in December, much as the Anschutz Ski Train used to do. AMTK 75, sporting the new Phase 7 scheme, will be power for the train along with AMTK 146 (in the Phase 5 scheme).
