Extra 6311 west (north) and Extra 6575 east (south) struck each other directly underneath the US-36 overpass shown in this image. The crewman on Extra 6311 read the incorrect train orders and the train departed Clear Creek before Extra 6575 had arrived. The resulting explosion melted the bridge! It was a cold and snowy day in Colorado. The lead unit was a patch Santa Fe SD40-2 and the second unit was a very nice SD75M painted in Warbonnet! The military train was carrying support vehicles (trucks and hummers). With the two green and white SD40-2's for power, this looks like it could have been taken 10 or even 20 years ago! The second and third units are from the two best-selling series EMD has ever produced (albeit there is a 30 year gap between the 70-series and 40-series). In fact, the power was extremely unique, with a BNSF warbonnet leading, followed by brand new KCS SD70ACe (#4009) and the BNSF 7920.
