At the BNSF yard in Cheyenne, the yard switcher (a GP35u) was idling away, snow occasionally dropping off the cab. In the background, the Rawhide Power Plant coal empty is proceeding north to the mines in the Powder River Basin.

With a warrant all the way to Utah Jct, the southbound HLAUDEN1-17 is clipping along pretty well at the fill just east of Wadsworth Blvd in Westminster. BNSF 7610, a brand new GEVO (ES44DC) leads the way.

BNSF 7610 has only been out on the road for two week! Here, it is leading a very heavy (11,000+ tons) HLAUDEN1-17 through the S-curve near Burns Jct. The city of Broomfield is busy building a new road paralleling the tracks in the foreground.

North meets south! The southbound STCPDEN3-15 is on the main line ("bottom" track) while the QDENTAC1-19 is on the siding ("top" track). There is an interesting difference in elevation between the siding and the main at Broomfield.

A C44-9CW and two SD40-2's lead up the STCPDEN3-15 on the main at Broomfield. Winter is in full force in the high country in Colorado, covering the divide with a nice blanket of snow. BNSF 4195 will hold the main at Broomfield to wait for a northbound to pull into the clear in the siding.

The QDENTAC1-19 waits on the main track near MP 12. The train will be meeting a southbound at the siding of Broomfield, but will not fit in the siding without blocking a crossing. So, the train is holding short, waiting for the arrival of the southbound. Note the lead unit, BNSF 8292, an SD75I.

BNSF 6948 heads up a single car Boeing train north on the Front Range Sub. This sole SD40-2 took the car all the way from Denver to Cheyenne. Must have been (relatively) easy on the crew!

After receiving a warrant to proceed north from Utah Junction all the way to MP 74 (near North Yard in Ft Collins), the northbound MDENLAU-13 moves slowly through the restricted limits of Clear Creek.

Of course the sun was still high enough to create a nice line through this former Rio Grande SD40T-2. That's okay though, because when it comes to these units, you have to take what you can get!

A southbound stack train approaches MP 32 on the Front Range Sub, and is being led by three thirty-year-old EMD's, the second of which was once a Rio Grande SD40T-2. It is now National Railway Equipment (NREX) 5398.

Under partly cloudy skies, BNSF 8026 leads a southbound STCPDEN along Valmont Reservoir and the Valmont Power Plant. The train has three classic EMD's (all rated as SD40-2s) and they sounded (and looked) great the 6600 foot long double stack train.

Valmont Power Plant in Boulder receives coal from a joint effort between Union Pacific and BNSF. The coal comes from Union Pacific's North Fork Branch near Grand Junction. Once in Denver, two UP units are left on the train and a BNSF SD70MAC is added. On this day, BN 9556 (in "green and cream") is slowing as it passes along Valmont Reservoir.

Just a few miles south of the siding of Owl Canyon, the MDENLAU-20 is making its way north as it crosses over County Road 7. Summer is still in full swing in Colorado as September is nearing! The white fluffy clouds in the background will soon give way to large thunder clouds, resulting in afternoon showers.
