No trains in this particular shot, but liked the black and white and the desert vibe. UP has erected some new signal masts, but they do not yet have signal heads. Many classic Rio Grande signals are still used here in the desert.

Unfortunately, a big cloud decided to blow through right as this westbound coal load came through. Fortunately, there was a very small sucker hole to get a little sunlight on the lead unit. It is here that the tracks and I-70 temporarily diverge from one another. The tracks move through Ruby Canyon, while I-70 heads north around it.

Earlier in the day, I shot the Minturn Local at Rifle. At that time, it only had three tank cars. The train worked the industries at Lacy (in West Rifle), and picked up 18 covered hoppers. The train is only the main at Palisade, less than 10 miles from the yard at Grand Junction.

This westbound oil train is moving slowly on the main at Glenwood. The train had a yellow (Approach) signal at Glenwood. The westbound Zephyr will soon be making its station stop, and the dispatcher is going to hold the oil train on the main here to ensure the Zephyr is not delayed.

On Soldier Summit, there are two sidings that are "center sidings", meaning the siding runs in the middle of two main tracks. Here, at Glenwood, there is just one main, but two sidings, with one siding running on either side of the main. This oil empty is headed west on a yellow (Approach) signal.

At one point, Rio Grande started to add two main tracks through all of Glenwood Canyon. However, the project proved to be too expensive, so it resulted in one very long siding, and three sidings overall in the canyon. Allen, toward the east end, is 14,250 feet long. Shoshone is very short at 3,960 feet, and almost connects to Allen, separated only by a short tunnel. Then, there is Grizzly, a 5,060 foot long siding is next, and it is here that we find this westbound oil empty.

An ES44AC and a pair of SD70ACes lead this westbound oil train on the main at Grizzly in the middle of Glenwood Canyon. The trees on the opposite side of the Colorado River were burned in the massive Grizzly Creek fire in August 2020. The fire consumed nearly 30,000 acres.

The Minturn Local has two C44ACMs and three tank cars in tow this afternoon. The train is in the siding at Rifle, and just met the eastbound Zephyr. The train now has a signal to depart west.

During a substantial snow storm, we get a look at UP's North Yard. The cars on the far right are on Track 1. The string of cars, largely consisting of tank cars, are sitting on Track 4.

EMDX 1609, still largely sporting Union Pacific colors, sits in North Yard, waiting to head west. Note the primer color around the radiator housing and part of the long hood. No doubt EMD has been conducting testing and upgrades on the unit.

Two of several SD70ACe-T4 demonstrators, painted in UP paint, have been returned to EMD. Electro-Motive Diesel tests the units and looks for means of improving the model. The units are headed west, currently waiting for a train assignment that will take them that direction.

EMD originally built a couple dozen SD70ACe-T4 demonstrator units. some were painted for and delivered to Union Pacific, BNSF, and Norfolk Southern. Two of these units, EMDX 1608 and EMDX 1609, have been at the Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo, but are now making their way west. The units were sitting near the North Yard tower on this afternoon, waiting to be added to UP's MNYGR to head west.

UP 5306 rounds the bend out of Rocky, headed toward the CO-93 underpass and Barbara's Gulch. In another mile or two, the train will be able to pick up some speed, as the part of the Moffat with the most curves will be left behind.

The only UP train manifest left on the Moffat, the MGJNY (and its counterpart, the MNYGJ) runs six times a week. West, then east, and repeat, with one day off. The train is generally feast or famine, with today's train being on the feast side with 103 cars. Many of the cars on the train are loaded coal hoppers.
