Rocky Flats Industrial Lead (UP) CSFN
At the absolute end of the Rocky Spur, on the other side of the Acrosa aggregate plant loadout. This G8 was built in the late 1950s by General Motors Diesel, the Canadian plant for EMD. The unit went to Canadian National and spent a lot of time around the CN system. It was eventually bought by Texas Industries Inc (TXI), and moved here, to the aggregate plant along CO-93. The unit became redundant when the aggregate plant purchase a track-mobile to switch cars. The unit has sat quiet in this same spot for the last 17 years, not being used since 2007. Fortunately, it has been donated to the Pueblo Railway museum. It will eventually be moved and restored.

In about two months, this scene should be shining with fall colors. For the time being, the green of summer looks pretty fantastic as an eastbound BNSF manifest rolls on the main alongside South Boulder Creek, approaching the east end of East Portal.

A BNSF manifest heads east on the main at East Portal, passing by a pond about halfway through the siding. The train went into emergency in the Moffat Tunnel, but the crew was able to resolve the issue and continue east. Fortunately, the issue did not return.

Eastbounds, other than (perhaps) Amtrak, are kind of tough to shoot coming out of the Moffat Tunnel. With the fall of ATCS, there is no real way to know when one might emerge, so it tends to be luck of the draw. Today, luck was on my side as I was able to get a shot of BNSF's Provo-Lincoln manifest, all tank cars at the head end.

A BNSF SD70ACe emerges back into the sunlight at the east end of the Moffat Tunnel. The east end of the tunnel also happens to be the west end of East Portal. This train went into emergency in the tunnel, about halfway through. Fortunately, the crew was able to take care of the problem, and it continued east.

A BNSF yard job is waiting on a string of covered hoppers for BNSF's Laurel to Denver manifest (that just came off the Front Range Sub) to clear so it can continue switching. The train is pulling in to Track 46. In the distance, Sunday morning traffic hustles along on I-25. Further in the distance, you can see the interchange between I-25 and I-70, referred to by locals as "The Mouse Trap".

Here is a wide variety of classic EMD units, most of which have been rebuilt to one extent or another. BNSF 2549 is a GP39-3, rebuilt from a GP30. You can still see the GP30 dynamic brake intakes and two of the three radiator fans. Back in the distance on the next track over, you can see what was once an SD45-2, now an SD40-2. The power is sitting at the shop, just off of the main through Denver.

It looks like a well car must have been bad-ordered and set out here near the engine house. Considering it has two JB Hunt double stacks, it seems possible this was cut out of the Denver to Chicago Z-Train.

I have long appreciated the fact that, when patching old Santa Fe and Burlington Northern units, BNSF matched the color scheme for the patches. Unlike UP, which simply slapped a yellow and red patch on the cabs. Nearly 30 years after the BNSF merger, a blue and yellow GP39-2 is seen hanging out around the Denver yard.

Unlike UP, which has essentially moved all maintenance out of Denver, BNSF still has a fair amount of maintenance that takes places in Denver. Additionally, BNSF tends to have more power hanging out in Denver compared to UP. As seen here, the service and ready tracks around the shops are packed full of power.

In a sea of BNSF orange is a single spot of red with a Canadian Pacific ES44AC. I don't see a lot of these units in Denver, and with the CPKC merger, it is only a matter of time before this paint scheme fades in to history.

A trio of SD70ACes, elephant-style, lead a relatively short Provo-Denver manifest. The train is just east of Leyden, crossing over Church Ditch, a man-made irrigation ditch that originates from Clear Creek in Golden.

After meeting the westbound Zephyr at Rocky, this BNSF manifest has received a clear route the rest of the way into the yard in Denver. The train is leaving Leyden behind and is crossing the 80th Avenue grade crossing. This is the only grade crossing between North Yard and Leyden that is not a quiet zone crossing.

A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver makes its way through the various neighborhoods located in western Arvada. The manifest is short enough that it does not even have any DPUs on the tail end. Very unusual for this particular train.

BNSF 704, sporting one of the most popular paint schemes in railroading (the Warbonnet Scheme) is the second unit on this eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. The Warbonnet does have an order battery cover behind the cab. This component is compatible with all like models, and is frequently changed out. Also of note, half the nose has just be straight up repainted in red. Regardless, the unit still looks mighty good, nearly 30 years after the BNSF merger.
