Meanwhile, what's up with the blue and white BNSF unit? This is a former Conrail GP38AC that BNSF has acquired. For the time being, they simply added their logo to the unit until some point in the future when it receives a full repaint. This blue and white scheme has earned these units the nickname "smurfs". These cars are self-propelled, can go up to 70 MPH, and can record every detail about and defect in the rails as they move along. I happened to come across the car sitting in the storage yard in North Yard on this Saturday afternoon.
