There is a lot that happens at Rosenberg, TX, also known as Tower 17. UP's Glidden Sub (originally part of SP's Sunset Route) meets with BNSF's Galveston Sub and BNSF train, such as this one, move from trackage rights on UP's Glidden Sub on to their own tracks on the Galveston Sub. The Galveston Sub also continues on the right side of the shot toward Galveston, TX. Then, in the foreground at the switch, the KCS Rosenberg Sub starts, branching off from UP's Glidden Sub, heading south toward Mexico.

But here, they must turn on to their own tracks. Traffic in the background is undisturbed by the train on the 1st Street overpass.

On a Thursday afternoon, a BNSF trackage rights train sits short of 3rd Street in Rosenberg, TX on UP's Glidden Subdivision. The train has just received a Diverging Clear (red over green) signal ahead to cross from UP's Glidden Sub over to BNSF's Galveston Sub to head north.

Prior to the days of PTC, signals that were approach lit would remain dark (shut off) until there was a train in the block approaching the signal. However, with the advent of PTC, signals will now light up just as soon as the dispatcher aligns a route through them. Such is the case at West Cliff (CP DS038) as we see a clear (green over red) signal set up for the eastbound Zephyr, still 90 minutes away.

Additionally, take note of the switch here at West Cliff. For a long time, this switch was set up as a "Y", meaning both the main and the siding slightly curved away from the single main track. However, UP has reconfigured the switch so the main is straight through the entire switch.

This BNSF coal load is stopped in the siding at Cliff and will be waiting here for the next 90 minutes or so, waiting for the eastbound Zephyr which is currently between Granby and Winter Park. The dispatcher did not want to risk trying to get the train up to Rollins ahead of Amtrak.

This BNSF coal load is climbing west of the Moffat, its back half still in Tunnel 27 in the distance. Not far behind the head end, the hoppers are passing what was once Tunnel 28. However, the tunnel has long since been daylighted (blown up), and the tan-colored rock face is the only evidence that remains.

As this heavy coal load emerges from Tunnel 27, the evidence of decades of other trains is quite clear on the exhaust-stained rocks around the west portal.

Looking past the nose of BNSF 9021, the lead unit on this westbound BNSF coal train, we see the three DPUs at the tail end, just beyond the grade crossing at Little Ten. The train has gone in to emergency each time it attempts to load. You can see a BNSF mechanical truck sitting near the DPUs. It would be determined that a low-hanging air hose was bumping against the plow of one of units, causing the air to be lost and the train to go in to emergency.

This westbound BNSF (loaded) coal train, headed for Valmy, NV, has been stuck in this spot for nearly two hours. When the train was climbing out of Rocky, it went in to emergency. After a second attempt, it happened again when the train started to load. BNSF mechanical has been called out to check out the train and attempt to find the cause.

For the past few months, BNSF has occasionally run a loaded westbound coal train up the Moffat. The train is loaded in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, and is on its way to Valmy, NV where BNSF has picked up a contract to provide coal for a power plant. BNSF is running the train with three units on the point and three units on the end.

A view that, in one form another, with one type of train or another, has been repeated somewhere around a half a million times since the Moffat Tunnel opened 96 years ago. The structure built over the rails has cameras that allow UP dispatchers in Omaha to view the tunnel. It also has motion sensors that detect trespassers, warning them they are trespassing if they attempt to approach the tunnel portal.
