The California Zephyr is about an hour late this morning, which worked out perfectly for lighting! The train hustles east here at the siding of Maxwell, in between Helper and Price. It is meeting a westbound coal load, which arrived in the siding just a few minutes earlier.

Passengers aboard the California Zephyr are hopefully enjoying the incredible views of the Utah desert under crystal clear skies this morning. The train is making its way east toward its next station stop in Grand Junction, CO.

The Utah desert is, without a doubt, one of my favorite places to shoot trains anywhere. There is such a raw beauty to the desert, as seen here with the eastbound Zephyr makes its way through some curves near Floy. The amazing Book Cliff create a fantastic backdrop for the scene.

You generally have to be quick on the trigger to get a shot of the Zephyr out here in the Utah desert. With the wide open spaces, many spots have a track speed of 79 MPH for passenger trains, and the Zephyr takes advantage of that! In this shot, the train is on the main at Desert, a very appropriate name for a siding here!

The westbound Zephyr departs the station at Grand Junction. A coal train that loaded at the West Elk Mine is actually making a reverse move onto the lead track along the main. It will be ready to depart west after the Zephyr departs and the Rocky Mountaineer comes through.

The westbound Zephyr is making an on-time station stop at Grand Junction. Passengers have about five minutes to step off the train here for a quick stretch. The engineer and conductor also change crews here. A Salt Lake City crew will board the train for the journey west across the Utah desert. The Denver crew, getting off the train, will stay in Grand Junction overnight and take tomorrow's eastbound train back to Denver.

One of the most scenic places any long distance Amtrak train traverses is Glenwood Canyon. In addition to the tracks and the Colorado River, the canyon contains I-70. This was one of the final major pieces of the interstate system to be completed. Until the 1980s, I-70 was just a two lane highway through the canyon. Now, it is four lanes through the entire thing.

It looks like it could be December, but in fact we are over halfway through April as a substantial spring storm brings a lot of snow to the area. The westbound Zephyr heads into Tunnel 1, trying to make up a bit of time. It is almost 90 minutes late this morning, due to extreme weather between Denver and Chicago.

AMTK 187, sporting Phase 7 paint, rolls west on the main track across 66th Avenue in Arvada. The train is almost 90 minutes late this morning, delayed due to weather in the mid-west. As you can see, snow is falling hard here in Arvada as well.
