Espee (and former Espee) power is not at all uncommon on the North Fork Subdivision. Particularly AC4400's from 100-199 on Espee's roster. This is because these units were not equipped with DPU capability. Coal trains on the North Fork run with two units on the point; no extra help. Therefore, it makes sense to use units that can't be utilized as DPU units elsewhere.

Afternoons in Colorado is often the time when severe weather moves into the state. This was the first time I'd taken any shots when it was hailing! This is the Roydale local heading back toward 36th Street with over 100 cars ready to be broken down and rebuilt into trains.

About five months...that's how long this former Grande SD50 has been sitting right here in this exact spot! With so many new units showing up on the property, UP has stored several units indefinitely. UP 9858 (ex-SP 5514, nee-DRGW 5514) is one such example. It is being stored in Burnham near downtown Denver.

Blowing snow was doing a nice job of covering up the rails at Plain as this westbound slowly made it way west on the main on an approach signal. The temperature, without wind chill, is two degrees!

A string of about two dozen units sits at UP's Burnham Shops in storage. Whether or not this is temporary storage or not remains to be seen. Most of these units have been here since early December 2006. The line consists of SD40-2s, SD50s, SD60s, C40-8s and some switchers. UP 9858 (ex-SP 5514, nee-DRGW 5514) is on the south end of the string of units. The tracks in the foreground are a part of RTD's Light Rail system in Denver.

Every since the start of December 2006, a few of the older units on UP's system have been placed in storage. Such is the case with UP 9858, sitting on a yard track in the Burnham Shops in Denver. Up until August 2001, this unit was SP 5514 (ex-DRGW 5514). It was patched after the UP merger and renumbered UP 5108. It kept that number for a mere 13 months, when it was renumbered to UP 9858 in September 2002 to make room for the SD70M's.

After meeting a southbound Z-Train at Hazeltine, this unique consist of American Orient Express cars departs north on the Greeley Sub. I believe the cars are being sent to Colorado Railcar in Fort Lupton. Summer afternoon clouds were building to the east of Denver over the plains.

Unfortunately I do not have a lot of shots of tunnel moters (Rio Grande or otherwise) on my website as they had faded fast by the time digital technology came around. However, you can still catch one every once in a while! Such was the case on this day as UP 8810 (ex-SP 8271) is the third unit on the MNYRO-27.

It is getting harder and harder to find unpatched Espee power anywhere in Colorado, let alone on the point anymore! SP 335 leads a westbound coal empty past the intermediate between Clay and Plain at the base of Coal Creek Canyon late in the day.

One of few Espee units still managing to hold on without a patch, SP 7954 is currently assigned to the South/Rocky local out of North Yard. The unit was sitting in North Yard Sunday afternoon waiting for a crew to be called for the next local.

The Rocky Local back up the spur toward the former site of Rocky Flats. The train has SP 7954, DRGW 3100, and UP 5245 for power, plus 20 cars going along for the ride. UP 5245 was first-ever Rio Grande unit to be patched or painted. It is former DRGW 3122.

UP's Roydale Local, which heads east out of the 36th street yard on the Limon Subdivision, prepares to depart the yard. DS-86 has just given the train a track warrant to proceed east and perform their work. The power consists for two ex-SP (SSW) GP40-2's, a UP GP38M-3, and a UP GP38-2. The Quest building stands tall in the Denver skyline in the background.
