There is a small platform and a railing for the conductor to hold on to as this oil train makes a reverse move on the main at Rocky. The conductor is ensuring the track behind the track is clear, and that the train has a signal out the east end.

After the tail end of the train in on the main just east of Rocky, the conductor will get off the last car and the train will continue to back up without any protection under General Code of Operating Rule 6.6. This rule allows for unprotected reverse movements in CTC when the train will not pass a control point or grade crossing (among other things).

The conductor of this westbound oil train is riding on the last car of the train. The train is currently backing up east through the siding. The switch at the west end of Rocky is broken, and the train will have to back out onto the main and then continue west on the main.

This is definitely a unit that could stand not only a wash, but a full on repaint. At least the unit is operable, an issue that a lot of UP units has been facing lately. It is the third unit on westbound oil train.

It is a crystal clear, blue sky morning as an ES44AC sits on the siding near the west end of Rocky. The paint on this unit is a bit spotty, but it is nice to see the American flag itself in pretty good shape.

A trio of units are on the point of a westbound (empty) oil train in the siding at Rocky. This oil train is a bit shorter than many, and these three units are the only three on the train. The train is waiting for the westbound Zephyr to pass it, at which point it will back out of the east end of the siding and proceed west on the main. The reverse move will be necessary due to a broken switch at the west end.

DS-380 was unable to throw the switch at the west end of Rocky. The conductor walked up to take a look. He discovered that the bar that connects the motor to the switch points somehow became detached from the switch points. The switch is currently not capable of being thrown! The oil train is going to have to wait for the Zephyr and then back out onto the main at East Rocky.

A few hundred feet from the CO-72 grade crossing, a quartet of covered hoppers sit idle on the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead. The West Local left these cars here a few days. Most likely, the aggregate plant on the spur was not ready to receive the cars, so they were simply left here. The next time the local runs, it'll likely shove the cars down to the plant.

Loram's LRV-14 is referred to as a "Rail Vac". It is actually a huge, extremely powerful vacuum on rails. It is capable of sucking up anything along the right-of-way, up to 15 feet from the center of the rail. It is of used for sucking up old ballast that is going to be replaced. Here, it is being transported to Denver on UP's MGJNY.

UP's thrice-weekly MGJNY runs west on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday and returns back east on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This morning, the manifest is in its final 10 miles as it approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street in Arvada. There are only two units on the train today as it is a (relatively) short train.

This westbound oil empty has reached the western end of the Dotsero Cutoff, at Dotsero. The train just knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end. The same control point at East Dotsero also provides access to Tennessee Pass from the west. You can see the track just above the the spot where the oil train winds to the left. The Minturn Local (which hasn't run as far in Minturn in decades) still runs a few miles to Gypsum on the west end.

UP 5251 sports UP's newest paint scheme as it leads a long, empty oil train out the west end of Range. The train is crossing a bridge that allows people to access Horse Creek, part of Eagle County Open Space.

Along the Dotsero Cutoff, the tracks cross from one side of the Colorado River to the other multiple time. One such bridge is right around MP 149.5 in red canyon. I am not sure if red canyon is the official name, but I do know that, as a kid, I always referred to these mountains as sunburnt mountains. A westbound oil train crosses the Colorado River as thunderstorms build to the east.

This westbound oil train was tied down in the east siding at Bond for about two hours while waiting for a relief crew from Yampa. After meeting the eastbound Zephyr at the west end of Bond, the empty train has clear (green) signals for the foreseeable future as there are no other eastbounds nearby. The train is wrapping around one of the many curves along the Colorado River, currently between Bond and Dell.
