A single Heritage 2 C44-9W brings up the end of an empty unit grain train across Eisenhower Drive near the east switch of Fraser. The unit grain train is a nice bit of variety for the Moffat.

43-year-old rail, rolled at Colorado Fuel & Iron (CF&I) in 1979, is showing a little bit of its age as flakes and chips of rail have been torn away along the railhead as an eastbound covered hopper rolls over the stamping of the rail.

As we move toward harvest season, more and more covered hoppers are moving toward the plains of the United States in preparation for loading. An eastbound BNSF (empty) unit grain train pulls along the platform in Fraser. The scene is drenched as rain continues to fall from an afternoon thunderstorm.

You can really see the near-2% grade amplified in this shot as a BNSF grain train pulls on to the slightly less intense 1% grade at Fraser. The forecast today called for thunderstorms all afternoon in the Fraser Valley and the meteorologists were spot on today as the rain is coming down hard!

A pair of units bring up the tail end of the Provo-Denver as the train makes its way down the main at Leyden. BNSF's yard has requested that, instead of running down to Prospect Jct on UP's main, the train will instead cross over at Utah Junction from UP's main to the BNSF main. Most likely the yard has asked to do this in order to hold the train at Rennicks until the yard is ready for it.

Dynamic brakes whine as a trio of GEs work to control the speed of this eastbound Provo-Denver manifest as it passes by the neighborhood of Leyden Ranch, just west of the siding of Leyden. The train has a Clear (green over red) signal at the west end of Leyden as it has a straight shot down to Utah Junction.

Elephant-style GEs, consisting of an ES44DC, an ET44C4, and a C44-9W lead a 93-car manifest west out of Denver. The three GEs up front are being helped by another two pushing on the tail end over an mile to the east.

A BNSF manifest, headed for Provo, UT, is not even 15 miles west of the yard in Denver at the start of its trip. Although the sun is now setting early in the afternoon, the low southern light makes for some pretty great shots.

A pair of ES44C4s lead an empty eastbound grain train at Kipling Street, just about 10 miles west of Union Station. The Denver-Metro area is low enough in elevation that some trees are still holding on to at least some of their leaves!

An eastbound BNSF (empty) grain train slowly descends down from Big Ten Loop toward a red signal at the west switch of Rocky. UP's dispatcher is waiting to hear from the BNSF yard master as to whether or not they can take the train. If the wait will be too long, the train can be lined in to the siding at Rocky. As it turns out, the wait was not long, and the empty received a clear signal after just a few minutes.

The BNSF Beer Run has pulled all the way through track 3 in the yard. It is going to need to double over the front half of the train on track 4. West 37th Drive runs through the middle of the Coors compound, seen here alongside the train. Clear Creek is on the opposite side of the train.

One of the most reliable, well-built units in history is, without question, EMD SD40-2. Nearly 50 years after its original build date, BNSF 1660 is still in service and working daily. Running a local may not be as prestigious as train it once ran, but it is great so many of this classic EMD units are still on the rails.

BNSF 2949 is a GP39-2 that has undergone a bit of modifications, particularly around the cab! The number boards above the cab have been brought forward and an air conditioner, among other things, has been added to the roof.
