The hottest train in Colorado, the ZDENCHI (Denver to Chicago) crosses the fill along Barr Lake after meeting the Zephyr at the siding of Barr. The dispatcher had a great meet set up, and the Z-Train was stopped for less than 15 minutes. I love this perspective as you get water, the plains, and mountains all in the scene.

Nearing the east end of Barbara's Gulch, this Provo-Denver passes a clear signal at the intermediate at MP 16.2. Not only are the three units on the point running elephant-style, but the two DPUs on the rear end are also elephant-style, facing east!

This Warbonnet is in surprisingly good shape for 2020! Other than the orange air conditioner and antenna on the cab roof. This is one of 20 Warbonnets in the 4700-series that were delivered in Warbonnet paint with "BNSF" in 1997, after the ATSF/BN merger. Because these units were never actually ATSF units, they are sometimes referred to as "Fake-Bonnets". Still, great catching this one at Eisele (Clay) on the Provo-Denver.

Lately, BNSF has been running their Provo-Denver manifest at such a time that it tends to descend down the Front Range sometime in the morning hours. This is great not only because the lighting tends to be better, but a lot of the time it results in a meet with the Zephyr. Did not get the Zephyr on this day, but was very happy to come across a Warbonnet C44-9W on the head end.

It's always fun to catch power that is foreign to the area. Along the Front Range, it is pretty much all BNSF and UP, all the time. So seeing a visitor from the south such as this Ferromex ES44ACs is particularly cool.

It is a perfect, picturesque morning in Arvada a few days in to summer as BNSF's Provo-Denver rolls east towards the crossing at Simms Street. BNSF manifest are now the only manifests that use the former Grande between Denver and Salt Lake. UP's manifest traffic between the two cities now entirely goes via the Overland Route in Wyoming.

The eastbound Provo-Denver passes by a "yellow board" east of Leyden on the approach to Simms Street. If you are unfamiliar with yellow boards like this one, they are an indication to trains that there is a speed restriction in place. Typically, these speed restrictions are expected to be in place for days or even weeks if MOW takes the time to put up the boards. In this case, this is a 40 MPH speed restriction.

Four units leads a 52-car manifest through Little Ten Curve at the west end of Rocky. When the railroad was first built, back in the Denver and Salt lake days, Rocky was actually named Arena. The name was changed after Rio Grande acquired the D&SL.

A quartet of GEs (including an ES44DC, an ET44C4, an AC4400CW, and another ES44DC) lead up the westbound Denver-Provo up and around Big Ten Curve. You can clearly see the back end of the train, still being pulled up from Rocky, on the north side of Big Ten. These four units had a short stay in Denver as they actually led the Provo-Denver east in to town yesterday morning. Now, they had back to Utah.

The Denver-Provo is leaving Rocky behind and is taking on the 2% climb up and around Big Ten Curve an in to Eisele (Clay). Interestingly, these four units led the Provo-Denver east in to town yesterday. A quick overnight fuel up and back to Utah they head.

BNSF's westbound Denver-Provo is on the main at Rocky. In the foreground is the main part of Big Ten Curve. As the crow flies, the train is about 1/2 mile away from the curve. By rail, however, it is still close to two miles away.

Despite having four units, this Provo-Denver is actually pretty darn short! Only 21 cars making up the train today, including a box car, three covered hoppers, an empty centerbeam, and 16 tank cars. The train is paralleling CO-72 and Welton Reservoir. This Reservoir was built in 2002 and started filling in 2003. It's primary use is for drinking water.
