Just below Cliff, an eastbound UP oil train follows South Boulder Creek as it enters in to the upper end of the Tunnel District. Steep canyon walls and sharp drop-offs are ahead. Clouds are moving in this afternoon, so lighting is starting to get a little sketchy.

After developing some air issues that caused the train to go into emergency in the Moffat Tunnel, BNSF's Provo-Lincoln manifest tied down in the siding at Cliff as the crew was getting short on time. Meanwhile, an eastbound UP manifest overtakes the manifest on the main. Note the two smiley faces drawn into the dirt on the nose of UP 6570.

A quartet of GEs leads an eastbound oil train across the bridge at MP 45.2, moving from the south side to the north side of South Boulder Creek. Three of the four units on the head end are slightly older AC4400CWs, with a single ES44AC in the consist, second out. In the distance, you can see the top of the Continental Divide.

Not too far east of the east switch of Tolland, a loaded UP oil train is leaving the Continental Divide behind, running between Tolland Road and South Boulder Creek. Clouds are starting to move in over the divide as rain is expected later in the day.

Three lights in a triangle arrange, reflecting off the rails, are the tell-tail sign of an approaching eastbound train coming up to the east end of the Moffat Tunnel. Of course, the question is what train is about to emerge.

With the cost and seemingly frequent mechanical issues of Tier-4 locomotives, many railroads have taken to rebuilding rather than buying new. UP is no exception, as they have been rebuilding C44-9Ws, C44AC-CTEs, and others into C44ACMs. UP 5830 is a good example, as it sports UP's newest official scheme on the ready tracks in North Yard.

A pair of SD60Ms sit on a shop track in North Yard. UP 2465 was delivered to UP in March 1992 and UP 2498 was delivered to UP in October 1992. 32 years later and both units are still on the roster. I don't recall the last time I saw an SD60M on the main, so not entirely sure where these two units came from or where they are headed.

An SD60M, with a bit of a sketchy paint scheme, sits on a shop track in North Yard. Not sure where the unit is headed from here. Storage? Sale? Rebuild? Any of the three seems like a possibility.

Of UP's six heritage units, UP 1983 is the one I had not seen the longest (eight years earlier, as of this shot). The angle and clutter in the shot isn't great, but I still wanted to get a shot while it was in Denver. It is currently sitting on the ready track in Denver, awaiting its next assignment.

The final car ahead of the SD70ACe DPU at the back of this oil train are about to roll by the hotbox detector at MP 22.6. The detector will reveal that there are no defects for this train, and the crew can continue on their journey west toward Bond, the next crew change point. The train itself will continue on to Wash, UT to be loaded.

There is barely a cloud in the sky as this oil empty approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. Indeed, there hasn't really been any significant cloud coverage along the Front Range since Sunday. Since then, it has been dry, hot, and still as there has been hardly any wind.

The two GEs on the point of this westbound oil empty, a C44ACM and an ES44AC, are indifferent to summer heat radiating off the ground as the train carries a long string of tank cars. The cars will be loaded at the transload facility in Wash, UT, just a few miles east of the town of Price.

This westbound oil empty just came out of Denver and had to pull over at Leyden, the first siding west of town. The train will be briefly delayed as it waits for a late Zephyr, currently on its way out of Denver around North Yard.
