After getting some help from UP MOW to get the west switch of Rocky thrown, the train is on the move again climbing Big Ten. The train departed Denver about 45 minutes late, but dealing with the switch at Rocky and a few speed restriction would result in the train being about 90 minutes late when it reaches Fraser.

The westbound Zephyr has come to a stop on Little Ten Curve on the main at Rocky. The west switch is not throwing (under power, by the dispatcher), so the crew on the Zephyr has been instructed to take the switch into hand throw. The Zephyr has a pair of Patrick Henry (private) cars on the end this morning.

The eastbound Zephyr, which departed Fraser about an hour late, is doing a good job of making up some time as it wraps around Little Ten Loop on the main at Rocky. The train would end up arriving in Denver only 20 minutes late!

Alas, five minutes after the Zephyr came through this scene, the sun broke out through the clouds. Alas, that's the way things break sometimes. Regardless, in the shot here we get a good look at the work Union Pacific has done on Big Ten Loop. A lot of rock has been added to reinforce the tracks on the grade here.

The scenery in the Denver area is as green as I can ever remember this May and June, thanks to a wetter than normal spring. The eastbound Zephyr makes is way east of Blue Mountain Road under partly cloudy skies.

Between Tolland and the bridge over East Portal Road, the tracks seem to run through a long valley of trees. This evening, an hour late Zephyr is running through a slow order on the approach to Tolland.

AMTK 18 and AMTK 147 lead the eastbound Zephyr across East Portal Road on the single track main between East Portal and Tolland. The sun is trying to press through the clouds around the Continental Divide in the distance.

A pair of P42DCs lead a baggage car and nine Superliners on an on-time westbound Zephyr. Here at Prospect Jct, as the train is about to pass underneath I-25, we see the Zephyr as it moves from BNSF to UP. The train has just changed channels from 3939 to 1414.

After an on-time departure, from Denver Union Station, the Zephyr has come to a stop in the OS at Prospect Jct to pick up a conductor that threw a switch. It is here at Prospect Jct that the Zephyr moves from BNSF tracks to UP tracks. It will run on Main 2 between Prospect Jct and Fox Jct, where it will change over to the single main track to continue west.

The morning Zephyr is working on getting out of Denver, crossing the north end of the Joint Line on Buck Lead. As you can see, there is a switch against the Zephyr, and the train has come to a stop. A conductor will hop off the train and walk up and throw the switch so the Zephyr can continue west. This is why the Zephyr will sometimes make a stop or two when departing.

With thunderstorms building to the north, the eastbound California Zephyr is about 50 minutes late as it rolls through Arvada. As we move closer to summer, the heat has been increasing, and UP has been putting out a lot of 10 MPH slow orders due to the possibility of sun kinks in the rails.

On a beautiful Friday and Thirteenth, the morning westbound Zephyr blasts by Barr Lake on BNSF's Brush Sub, a nice reflection coming off the lake. The Zephyr is running 30 minutes ahead of schedule today, meaning passengers will have an extended air break at the station in Denver.

The westbound Zephyr is running nearly 30 minutes early this morning, making track speed along I-76 between Hudson and Barr. Looks like the Zephyr is officially back up to nine Superliners!
