A pair of GEs bring up the tail end of an eastbound UP coal empty, heading out of the siding at Rocky and on to the main, around the bend in to Barbara's Gulch. The train is running on an Approach (yellow) signal, following behind the Rocky Mountaineer on an overcast April afternoon.

Crazy how things change over time. 20 years ago, nobody would ever expect to find an empty UP coal train running over the Moffat. That's exactly what we see here, however, as this empty departs east out of the siding at Rocky after letting the Rocky Mountaineer overtake it. This train will load in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, and then head west (loaded) on the Overland. The eastbound empty comes east across the Moffat to remove a slower, lower priority train from the Overland.

Just west of the switch that leads to the main at Rocky, a track tamper is tied down on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. The West Local runs up the spur on Tuesdays. Since today is Friday, MOW crews do not have to worry about the equipment being in the way for several more days.

UP 8745 sits on the ready track at North Yard, awaiting its next assignment. Looks as though the trucks may have recently been swapped out. The shade of gray definitely does not quite match the fuel tank!

UP 6696 sits near the North Yard shops with blue flags posted. Behind UP 6696, a string of engines sit on the ready track. As the name implies, engines on the ready track are ready for their next assignment.

An SD70M sits just south of the engine shop at North Yard. With all heavy maintenance having been moved to North Platte, I'm not even sure to what extent maintenance on engines can be done at North Yard these days. Regardless, the shop door is open on a Sunday afternoon.

A GP38-2 (now designated as a GP38N after a rebuilt by UP) and an SD40-2 sit together near the yard office in North Yard. These two units are idle at the moment, but when needed, they'll be used as switcher in the yard. It is pretty easy to trace the heritage of UP 737 by virtue of the fact that it has no dynamic brakes. With very few exception, nearly any unit without dynamic brakes is of Missouri Pacific heritage. MoPac ordered many units that had no dynamic brakes as MoPac ran in (relatively) flat lands.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
The ZLBDV has arrived in Denver and is currently shoving cars back in to the intermodal facility located just off of UP's 36th Street Yard. This entire area, known as the Rhino District of Denver, has radically changed in the past 10-15 years. Massive apartment complexes have built up all around the yard. New restaurants have opened in the area and new bridges cross the yard to connect either side of the tracks.

The Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver has a lot of great, classic equipment. Trains, cars, motorcycles, and even a few small planes. One of the "crown jewels" of the train collection is UP 4005. It is one of only 25 that were produced between 1941 and 1944. This particular one is "stuffed" meaning it is no longer operable. But it looks pretty great sitting inside the museum, safe and protected from the outside conditions of the world.

After passenger trains, the second most difficult train to get ahead of is definitely a Z-Train! I was able to set up for this shot just south of Platteville, with four GEs on the point. But this would be the last shot I was able to get prior to the train arriving in Denver.

UP 8205 and train have a clear (green) signal on the main at the south switch of La Salle. You may note that there is a derail set on the siding here. That is due to a local that is currently in the siding and switching out cars at the yard in La Salle.

Not too far north of Nunn on the Greeley Sub, a quartet of GEs has this southbound Z-Train on the move at track speed. Since PSR (Precision Scheduled Railroading) has somewhat taken over several railroads, there are more "mixed" trains. Case-in-point is this Z-Train which has many auto racks on the front, and traditional stacks and pigs on the rear.

UP 8205, leading the ZLBDV-12, knocks down a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal at the north end of Carr, heading in to the siding. The northbound train that is being met is already between switches on the main. Should be just another few weeks and the trees here will have their leaves back for the summer.
