The rail laying along the tracks is a new rail that will be installed. Tie plates were dumped along the track, but were not counted out. After laying out the needed tie plates, the excess are now being collected. You can see one of the tie plates hanging on to the outside of the magnet lifting it. The crew is about to start picking up new tie plates that are along the right-of-way, in excess of the number that will actually be needed for the new rail that will, at some point, be replaced. It was great seeing UP 1100 on the MGJNY this morning, which has been working in Grand Junction, likely headed to North Platte for a 92-day inspection. UP is a rebuild program where they are turning old GEs (C44-9Ws and C44AC-CTEs) in to C44ACMs. It is possible some of these units are headed for such a rebuild. Seven units on the head end, only the first three of which are actually online, lead the train with a single DPU on the tail end. The train is crossing 66th Avenue, following along Oberon Road. This train worked throughout the day, dumping ballast along the tracks. Indeed, UP close the line today, resulting in Amtrak not running between Denver and Grand Junction. While not particularly enjoyable as the air quality has significantly decreased, the one benefit about the smoky atmosphere is a bit of red and yellow near dusk as the sun shines through the smoke. Personally, it is one my personal favorite specially painted units. The clever combination of Air Force silver, Navy gray, camouflage, and red, white, and blue make for a fantastic tribute to the US military. In an interesting role reversal, the two EMD SD70ACes kick out a lot of exhaust when throttling up, while the GE in between burns clean through the acceleration. UP 1943 has been working oil trains for several months now, and continues to do so, leading the unit train west through some of the hills of the Colorado plains. The crew just called up DS-380 to inform him that the hotbox detector at MP 22.6 gave an axle count that did not match the count in the crew's paperwork. The detector indicated five more cars than what the crew believes they have. Consequently, operating procedures indicate the train cannot exceed 30 MPH for the rest of the trip in to Denver. When it departed Bond, three more units had been added to the head end, and 57 cars had also been added to the train! The 57 cars were from industries located on the Craig Branch in the Steamboat and Craig area. The train is making its way through the curves below Tunnel 1 and at Blue Mountain Drive.
