Here is a scene that looks substantially different than it did 30 years ago. Back then, the two tracks on the left did not exist at all. They were added in the early 2000s to accommodate the huge number of coal trains that ran on the Moffat back then. Then, about 15 years ago, the bridge in the background was built to take Pecos Street up and over the tracks. Here, in 2024, a UP manifest backs away from the camera and in to North Yard.

UP 3032 is one of the 87 SD70ACe-T4s that UP currently has on the roster. Indeed, one of the only SD70ACe-T4s that actually exists in the United States. To say the EPA Tier-4 units are unpopular with North American railroads would be an understatement. Railroads are, instead, choosing to invest in rebuilding older power rather than buy these newer, more complex, and more expensive units. UP 3032 is working on backing the train in to North Yard.

About 10 minutes before the sun dips behind the mountains, an SD70ACe leads a westbound oil train through the cut between Arvada and Leyden. The train was waiting at Arvada on Main 1 for the eastbound Zephyr, which took Main 2 on its way in to town.

Looking west through the signal bridge at C&S Junction, we see the headlight of UP's MGJNY approaching on Main 2. The train is actually stopped just short of Lowell Blvd, waiting for a signal at C&S and continue in to the yard. If you look closely, you can actually see the crossover bent from Main 2 to Main 1.

A pair of UP GP38-2s sit on a string of cars on Denver and Rock Island trackage right near UP Junction. The two units are waiting for a UP crew to take the cars from the Denver and Rock Island over to North Yard, where UP will forward them on to their final destinations.

As you can clearly see, UP 7051 clearly encountered its snow somewhere on the way east between Grand Junction and Denver. Here, at C&S Junction, the manifest is leaving Main 2 (which becomes Main 3 here at C&S) and is entering the west end of the North Yard Siding.

A smattering of five GEs lead a westbound unit oil train, sitting on Bypass 2 at C&S Junction. Two of the units have quite faded paint schemes, while the number boards on UP 6777 are virtually impossible to read.

UP 6777 is on the point of a westbound empty oil train, stopped on Bypass 2 at C&S Junction. there is a crew onboard the train, but for reasons not clear, it is not heading west. What's more, it would actually be several hours before it finally did head west.

In 1987, a video was filmed featuring Rio Grande. As a kid, it was one of my favorite things to watch. I specifically recall one scene filmed right here, atop Rainbow Cut. Now, close to 40 years later, I got a shot of this eastbound UP manifest as it approaches Rainbow Cut on the main track.

At the time I took this picture, I was surprised the manifest did not take the siding to meet the westbound Zephyr. Only later on did I learn that the Zephyr had in fact been annulled, so the manifest has clear signals the rest of the way down the hill.
