BNSF 8576 leads BNSF's Provo-Denver across the South Platte River on the Buck Lead. The train will take the wye off the Buck and around the bend toward 31st Street Yard. A flock of pigeons is understandably spooked by the loud, metal beast, and they take to the air in escape.

After sitting for a little while at a red signal on Main 2 waiting for BNSF's 31st Street Yard to be ready to receive it, the Provo-Denver is now on the move at Prospect Jct. The train is leaving both Union Pacific tracks and CTC behind as the power moves onto the Buck Lead.

BNSF 2697 is a former GP35, that has been rebuilt as a GP39-3. You can clearly see where the smaller center radiator fan on the long hood was once located. I suspect it was removed to reduce maintenance costs, as the fan was a different size. I find it interesting that UP got rid of all of their old GP30s and GP35s, while BNSF opted to keep much of the power, simply rebuilding it.

It was a really great day to get some shots of classic EMD power around BNSF's Denver Yard. Here, a former GP30 (rebuilt as a GP39-2, internally) and a former ATSF SD45-2 serve as switching power! The SD45-2 is now designated as an SD40-2R, the 20-cylinder prime mover long since removed and replaced with a 16-cylinder. I am still designating it as an SD45-2 on the website, just for searchability purposes!

I thought it pretty fantastic that you can clearly see five classic "Dash-2" EMD units in this shot! Four SD40-2s and a GP40M (originally a GP40-2) all sit on the north side of the BNSF engine house this Sunday afternoon.

Now here is a nice, classic lash-up of a quartet of "40s". Two Cascade Green SD40-2s, a New Image GP40M (originally a GP40-2), and a New Image SD40-2. Crazy to think that this would have been a fairly typical consist for a road train 30-40 years ago. Yet, today, it is all just power for switching the yard and running locals.

It is not too common that in 2025 you can find a pair of Cascade Green SD40-2s lashed up together! Granted, the paint is pretty seriously faded, but it still nice to see. BNSF 1958 was once numbered BN 6351; you can see the old number starting to show through the pain at the tail end of the long hood.

BNSF's Provo-Denver comes rolling eastbound on UP's main track on the east side of North Yard. The train to the right of train (when looking at the photo) is BNSF's "New North Main", which leads to the Front Range Sub north of Utah Junction. the track the Provo-Denver is on, and all tracks to the left, are owned by UP.

A pair of DPUs bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver as the train passes 40-50 gondolas, tied down in the siding here at Leyden. Note the red flag that has been placed in the middle of the siding, facing the gondolas. There is a portable derail on the siding just beyond the red flag (toward the camera).

BNSF 5699 leads BNSF's daily manifest east on the main at Leyden. Note the ballast is lighter on the main compared to the siding. UP dropped fresh ballast along the main about a week earlier as part of a maintenance project on the Moffat. Gondolas are still being stored in the siding here at Leyden.

BNSF consistently runs oil train in a 3x3 configuration, and this eastbound is no exception. The train has a buffer car on either end of the train, and 95 tank cars loaded with waxy crude oil. The train is just about to enter the final tunnel on the Moffat, Tunnel 1.

This eastbound loaded oil train has been making track speed since Cliff, but is coming up on a 15 MPH slow order. The slow order is about a mile long, and there is a second two mile long slow order around Big Ten Curve. The crew only has 70 minutes remaining on the clock, so the train will take the siding at Rocky and tie down.

BNSF 5830 just met the westbound Rocky Mountaineer, and is now departing Cliff on the main track eastbound. East Cliff is a bit of an interesting OS, as it is about 1,000 feet long. The curve of the track prevents the east switch from being visible from the grade crossing, so the signals at the east end are quite a ways west of the switch itself.
