Minutes after sunrise, UP's MGJNY (Manifest, Grand Junction, CO to North Yard in Denver, CO) rolls east toward Tunnel 1. UP's manifest between Denver and Grand Junction (and back) is the only regularly scheduled manifest UP still runs on the Moffat. It runs each direction three times a week.

Less than ten minutes after sunrise, the only UP manifest that still runs on the Moffat is approaching the grade crossing at Plain. The rest of the train is still making its way through Tunnels 2, 3, and 4.

The morning Winter Park Express, running about 15 minutes late (and seen here around 22 minutes after sunrise), heads west. The train just passed the high/wide detector at MP 8.4. The detector specifically checks to see if anything is sticking off the side or if there is a car that is too high to fit through the tunnels in the tunnel district. If something is sticking out, it'll break the wire on the detector and inform the dispatcher (and the train, via radio). No problems this morning though!

Just west of CP DS007, where two main tracks funnel down to a single track, the morning Winter Park Express has just throttled up and is proceeding west. The train is running about 15 minutes late this morning.

The Provo-Denver has a pretty typical configuration of three units on the head end and two units DPU'd on the tail end. BNSF's manifest on the Moffat often consist primarily of tank cars, with this train being no different. There currently is no crew on the train and the derail on the siding is set. This guy is going to be here for awhile longer!

BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest is tied down in the siding at Rocky. It arrived here about 10 hours ago, a little after 10pm the previous night. It continues to wait for a fresh crew that will take it the rest of the way in to Denver.

A fresh layer of powder fell overnight, covering the landscape. A pair of P42DCs pull the five-car Winter Park Express toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. Amtrak annulled both Amtrak 5 and 6 yesterday, so there will be no Zephyrs through Colorado today.

BNSF's Denver-Provo has five refrigerated box cars on the head end, very possibly carrying beer from the Coors Brewery. A significant portion of the rest of the train consists of tank cars, which is very common for the train. The train passes by houses in Leyden Rock, a neighborhood built roughly ten years earlier.

Not too far behind the westbound Zephyr, BNSF's Denver-Provo passes by Welton Reservoir just west of Leyden. The reservoir was built in 2002, and is a source of drinking water for suburbs west of Denver.

After arriving 12 1/2 hours late in Chicago, it took Amtrak a little time to get the train ready for the trip west. It departed Chicago nearly five hours late the previous day, and departed Denver just over five hours late today. Here, clouds are keeping the train in shadows as it leaves west out of Leyden.

The westbound Zephyr makes a fairly rare afternoon departure from the Denver area as it is running 5 hours and 15 minutes late. Trying to make up time, the train is moving at track speed parallel to Oberon Road in Arvada. Oberon Lake #1 is visible on the opposite side of the tracks.
