When Amtrak started running the Winter Park Express again a few years ago, they seemed to make an effort to include a specially-painted (heritage) unit on the train. Not the case this year, as AMTK 142 and AMTK 192 lead the train west, just west of Tunnel 1.

On a freezing January morning, the third run of the Winter Park Express kicks up a lot of snow as it charges west out of Leyden. The departed about 20 minute due to an issue with their PTC (Positive Train Control).

The sun is just barely peeking out from clouds to the east as the westbound Winter Park Express crosses 80th Avenue, just east of the east switch of Leyden. The train is kicked up a bit of snow on this extremely frigid January morning. The temperature this morning is a bone chilling -10°F (-23°C)!

The westbound California Zephyr departed Denver about 30 minutes late, and is about 90 minutes behind the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) as it charges west on the main at Plain. UP has a lot of equipment and stacks of panel track alongside the House Track at Plain.

A year from now, if the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) runs in 2025, there will very likely be houses in the background in this shot. For the first run in 2024, however, there is only asphalt and a few construction vehicles behind the westbound Ski Train on the main at Plain.
