May and June tend to be the two greenest months of the year in the Denver area, and May has been no exception in 2024. The Zephyr passes west through Eisele amidst the great green grass.

It seems that the issues that have plagued the Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s the last two seasons have largely been resolved. It is great to see them running on the point of the train, paint schemes nicely matched to the cars. The train is westbound on the main at Eisele (Clay).

The westbound Rocky Mountaineer makes its way around Big Ten Curve, rolling slow due to a 10 MPH slow order. In the background, you can see an eastbound BNSF manifest (with a KCSM unit third out) tied down in the siding in the distance.

A very long (roughly 6,400 feet) BNSF Provo-Denver has just tied down in the siding. The train was originally going to tie down at Cliff, but was too long for the siding. So it continued down to Rocky. Unfortunately, the crew van was not notified of the change and is waiting up at Cliff. The van has now been informed and is on its way to Rocky. Meanwhile, the Zephyr heads north on the main at Eisele (Clay) in the background.

The hoppers on the inside of Big Ten Curve, that serve as a wind break, have definitely become the victim of graffiti in recent years. Passengers on the westbound Zephyr will be able to look out to the hoppers on the right side, or over to the great plains out the left side. You can see the west end of Eisele (Clay), as well as Tunnel 1, in the distance.

Partly cloudy skies have shadows floating across the landscape as the westbound Zephyr climbs up toward Big Ten Curve. It has been a bit of a chilly spring, but things are warming up. It is a very pleasant 55°F this mid-May morning.

The westbound Zephyr is right on time as it heads west on the main at Rocky. BNSF's Provo-Denver is in the siding and the crew just finished tying down the train. Handbrakes have been set on 25 cars, and the crew is now waiting for a crew van to pick them up. Not the Rocky Spur, climbing up an 8% grade, to the left.

Someone once said the only thing that stays the same is change. For the past few months, UP has periodically been running this coal empty eastbound on the Moffat. Once arriving in Denver, the train will head north on the Greeley Sub and eventually the Yoder Sub, making its way to the Power River Basin where it will load. The loaded train will head west through Wyoming on the Overland Route. Note the red flag that UP has put up on the siding at Leyden, protecting the empty well cars that have been stored for over four months now.
