High winds and light rains are keeping the drone on the ground, so I settled for this long lens shot of a westbound oil train climbing around Big Ten. Note the Canadian Pacific ES44AC, joining the consist today.

After meeting an loaded UP oil train at Arvada, this BNSF empty is starting its journey west of Denver for the loadout at Wash in Utah, just east of Price. Six units are on the head end of the train, but it will likely be configured 3x3 for the return journey east.

Four units are leading an eastbound loaded oil train on the main at Leyden. The crew has about one hour left to work before running out of hours. After making its way through a handful of 15 MPH slow orders (due to heat), the train is on green signals on the main at Leyden, now only about 10 miles from Denver.

A trio of SD70ACes, elephant-style, lead a relatively short Provo-Denver manifest. The train is just east of Leyden, crossing over Church Ditch, a man-made irrigation ditch that originates from Clear Creek in Golden.

After meeting the westbound Zephyr at Rocky, this BNSF manifest has received a clear route the rest of the way into the yard in Denver. The train is leaving Leyden behind and is crossing the 80th Avenue grade crossing. This is the only grade crossing between North Yard and Leyden that is not a quiet zone crossing.

A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver makes its way through the various neighborhoods located in western Arvada. The manifest is short enough that it does not even have any DPUs on the tail end. Very unusual for this particular train.

AMTK 76 knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden on its morning journey west. The east end Leyden is designated as CP DS012 by Union Pacific (as you can see on the signs by the signals). The "DS" represents "Denver & Salt Lake", David Moffat's railroad that predated Rio Grande. The "12", of course, indicates we are 12 miles west of Denver Union Station.

After running several hours late the previous two days (due to extreme mid-west weather), this morning's Zephyr is running right on time as it heads west from Denver, through Arvada. Major forest fires in the Pacific Northwest are creating smoke that is resulting in the Denver-Metro area being very hazy. You can barely see the Denver skyline in the distance as the Zephyr approaches Leyden.

The final car ahead of the SD70ACe DPU at the back of this oil train are about to roll by the hotbox detector at MP 22.6. The detector will reveal that there are no defects for this train, and the crew can continue on their journey west toward Bond, the next crew change point. The train itself will continue on to Wash, UT to be loaded.

There is barely a cloud in the sky as this oil empty approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. Indeed, there hasn't really been any significant cloud coverage along the Front Range since Sunday. Since then, it has been dry, hot, and still as there has been hardly any wind.

The two GEs on the point of this westbound oil empty, a C44ACM and an ES44AC, are indifferent to summer heat radiating off the ground as the train carries a long string of tank cars. The cars will be loaded at the transload facility in Wash, UT, just a few miles east of the town of Price.

Two GEs lead up this westbound empty oil train on the main at Eisele (Clay). The train has just made the climb up and around Big Ten Curve, with the tail end still on the south edge. You can see the tracks leading west out of Rocky toward Big Ten Curve to the left.

A westbound oil train makes it's way west through Little Ten Curve, out the west switch of Rocky, and climbing up to Big Ten Curve. In just a matter of minutes, the train will be on the main track in the foreground (the main is closest to the camera).

The shutter fired just a moment too late, almost cutting off part of the nose on AMTK 157 and the westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. The train experiences over three hours of delays in the mid-west due to extreme weather and downed trees.
