Following roughly an hour behind a westbound coal empty, the westbound Zephyr is making track speed as it kicks up a bit of fresh fallen snow dust at Leyden. Something else of note...if you look closely at the west house track switch on the siding, you'll note a chunk of track missing. UP took the west switch of the track out of service years ago. They removed the frog and spiked the switch.

A trio of GEs leads a westbound coal empty on the main at Rocky. Piles of used ties line the siding, waiting to be picked up. UP has been involved in a major maintenance project, replacing ties, tie plates, and ballast for the past several months. The project is finally nearly completion, save for a bit of cleanup work.

After the morning Winter Park Express rolled through, there was an unexpected bonus when this westbound coal empty highballed the east end of Rocky, following about 30 minutes behind the Winter Park Express.

Skiers have to be pretty happy to see a fresh dusting of snow along the Front Range as the Winter Park Express climbs the grade from the base of Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1. While it is only 7°F (-14°C) here along the Front Range, it around 25°F (-4°C) in Winter Park. Still cold, but not quite a frigid as here.

The Front Range finally received a decent amount of snow overnight, no doubt making the passengers on this morning's Winter Park Express happy. The train kicks up some snow, blowing alongside the Superliners, as it heads west on time just east of the Kipling Street grade crossing in Arvada.

One of the two P42DCs on the westbound Zephyr developed a mechanical issue on the overnight trip across Iowa. When the train stopped in Lincoln for its scheduled station stop, the issue could not be resolved, so a BNSF ES44C4 was added to the point of the train. The snow has largely stopped falling here at Plain as the train heads west into the Rockies.

Only the second snowfall of the winter season is coming on January 8th as the first Thursday run of the Winter Park Express heads west at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. Skiers are probably pretty pleased with what they are seeing as they head for a day of fun on the slopes.

It is time for the Winter Park Express to kick off another season, even though there is currently no sign of winter in Colorado! As has been the case for the past few years, the Ski Train is starting the season with just five Superliners (four coaches plus a lounge car). The train is just west of Tunnel 1 on a very moderate morning, with temperatures around 50°F (10°C) just six days before Christmas.
