Yard Shots Union Pacific
The last bit of light is quickly fading from the west sky as a westbound grain train meets an eastbound grain train at the east end of Cheyenne Yard. The train approaching the camera is on Main Two and has just received a fresh crew in Cheyenne. The train to the left is crossing from Main Three to Main Four, heading for a crew change itself.

Some switching action in the yard at Cheyenne can be seen from the Norris Viaduct. This overpass is right at the east end of the yard. SD40-2 #3150 is sandwiched in between two sets of hoppers as its RCL crew works to rearrange the cars.

It is late in the day as this West Colton, CA to North Platte, NE manifest slows just west of Cheyenne on Main One. The train will wait for tracks ahead to clear so it can make a crew change before continuing east toward Nebraska. A bit of, ummm, industry is visible in the background from the Dyno Nobel plant!

Time for a bit of fun as we (being my friend and driver Damian and myself) pace UP 4141 on the point of an eastbound manifest just outside Cheyenne. The unit, painted and numbered for the George HW Bush Presidential Library, looks like it could stand a good bath!

In November 2005, UP unveiled a specially-painted SD70ACe. It was painted in a scheme reminiscent of Air Force One. It was so-painted in honor of the George HW Bush Presidential Library, which had a special section on trains (and their history) in America. Nearly three years later, I was finally lucky enough to catch this unit on the point of a manifest approaching Cheyenne on UP's Overland Route. Here, said train is on Main One at Borie, a few miles west of Cheyenne.

Dark clouds in the eastern sky make for a nice dramatic evening shot as the sun makes its way into the eastern sky. This manifest, headed for West Colton, CA, just received a fresh crew in Cheyenne and is headed west on Main One.

A roster shot of UP 2001 on the point of the IOADVX-04. I think that this was a very inspired paint scheme. I love the snow flakes all over the unit!

At the BNSF yard in Cheyenne, the yard switcher (a GP35u) was idling away, snow occasionally dropping off the cab. In the background, the Rawhide Power Plant coal empty is proceeding north to the mines in the Powder River Basin.

Two unit grain trains, both headed east toward Cheyenne, take very different routes on the way. The train on the right will run directly into Cheyenne on main one. The train on the left is taking the Borie Cutoff up to Speer Junction, and will then enter on main three or main four.

There are only 17 SD50's (now shown as SD50M's) on Union Pacific's roster. All 17 are former Rio Grande units. Here is one fo the 17, UP 9847 (ex-UP 5098, ex-SP 5504, nee-DRGW 5504). Note the plate on the nose where the MARS lights were once located.

A unit box train was holding on main one just west of Cheyenne, waiting for a track to open so the train could continue east. The train had a new ES44AC, an ex-DRGW SD50, and two SD70ACe's for power.

A derailment in Tunnel 10 on the Moffat Tunnel Sub caused Amtrak 5 to be re-routed through Wyoming on a very cold Saturday morning. Here, Amtrak 5 is on rails seldom seen by Amtrak since the end of the San Francisco Zephyr, approaching Speer Junction (about to pass under Terry Ranch Road), just a few miles in Wyoming north of Colorado.
