A look inside Denver Union Station. The Christmas tree and Christmas decorations have all be put up for the holiday season. While the infrastructure was not changed with the redevelopment of the area, the inside of Union Station was pretty significantly remodeled. New restaurants and the Terminal Bar were added. The Crawford Hotel moved in. The seating inside was completely redone. It looks pretty good!

The westbound California Zephyr is currently stopped on Track 4 at Denver Union Station. A few passenger are still arriving, ready to board the train that is scheduled to depart in roughly 15 minutes. The train is a bit forward on Track 4 as the train has to stop at the fuel pads for the engines as Denver is a refueling stop.

The final Superliner on the morning Zephyr is a combined Coach-Baggage car. It is sitting on Track 4 near the classic Denver Union Station building. Despite all the construction in this area over the past 20 years, the station itself hasn't changed much, and still sports the classic "Union Station" and "Travel by Train" signs.

The ALC-42 Chargers hold roughly 2,200 gallons of diesel fuel. As you can see from the reading, almost exactly half of the fuel has been used on this particular units. 1,173 gallons are still in the tank.

A look at the conductor's side of AMTK 341, sporting the Phase 7 scheme. As is the case with many units, the model number is on the nose. The builders plate is also located on the nose.

When Amtrak was first formed in 1971, it was EMD that primarily got into the passenger power game, with the SDP40, followed by the F40PH. Then, in the 1990s, GE won the next contract with Amtrak with the P42DCs, beating out EMD's F59PHI. Fast-forward another 30-ish years, and neither EMD or GE (well, now Wabtec) are in the passenger game! Siemens is in the process of building 125 ALC-42 "Chargers" to supplements (or, in some instances, replace) the aging P42DC fleet. The units will be numbered 300 to 424.

A look at the nose of P42DC AMTK 78. You can definitely see the years of age on the face of the unit, with various scratches, dents, and scuffs. The unit was delivered in June 1997.

The morning Zephyr is sitting on Track 4 at Union Station for its standard morning station stop. The train arrived 40 minutes early, and is expected to depart right on time. AMTK 341, an ALC-42 "Charger", sits on Track 5. Amtrak has ordered 125 of these of Siemens-built units, and they are still being delivered.

One of two Sleeping Cars (not including the Transition Sleeper) sits on Track 4 at Denver Union Station on the westbound California Zephyr. The first round of Superliner were delivered to Amtrak between 1979 and 1981, so this Superliner is right around 45 years old.

An empty oil train just received a light at C&S Junction on Bypass to head west on the Moffat. The crew is starting the journey to Bond, where there will be a crew change to then take the train on the Grand Junction. Without changing tracks, the train is moving from Bypass 2 to Main 1, ready to cross over Federal Blvd.

It is a little difficult to tell from this view, but the engineer has flipped on the headlights on UP 7634. The brakes are being released and the engineer has notched the unit into Run 1 to start creeping west. The unit is on the point of an empty oil train, ready to head west and tackle the Moffat.

A westbound oil train is sitting on Bypass 2, presently facing a red signal at C&S Junction. Indeed, you can see the signal the crew is looking at on the signal bridge, right over the track. In just a minute, this signal will turn green and the train will depart west.

An SD40N and a GP40-2 sit paired together in North Yard. The units have been used on the South Local lately, which runs south on the Joint Line a couple of days a week. At the moment, they are idling, waiting for their next assignment.
