Amongst some other units that have fueled and serviced and are awaiting their next assignment is UP 4548 and UP 4055. Two of the 1000 SD70Ms ordered by UP (in a single order) around 2000.

Yard Shots CSX
Interesting story behind this CSX ES40DC. It, along with 301 of its CSX siblings, were actually delivered as a 4400 HP ES44DC. Around 2010, CSX actually downgraded the prime movers to 4000 HP and redesignated the units as ES40DCs. UP is currently leasing this one as it sits on the ready track at North Yard.

A CSX ES40DC is quite a little ways from home, on lease to UP. The unit is sitting on the ready track in North Yard, awaiting its next assignment.

Sporting New Image paint and air conditioning for the cab, BNSF 1984 will be the power on the Golden Switch (local) for the upcoming week. Interestingly, the middle radiator fan (at the back of the long hood) appears to be slightly smaller than the other two. Almost like the mid-fan on an SD35.

BNSF has a local that runs out of Golden, heading east on the Golden Sub on weekdays. On Saturdays, the power for the local is taken to Denver for refueling and servicing (if needed). If necessary, the power is even swapped out. On Sunday, the local power returns to Golden on the Beer Run. Here, BNSF 1660 and BNSF 1984, both SD40-2s, have the duty for the upcoming week.

An eastbound UP coal load is coming up to an approach (yellow) signal at the Pecos crossover. At the same time, BNSF's Beer Run is headed west on Main 3 on a approach restricting (red of lunar) signal. The crew on the Beer Run has dimmed its headline to avoid blinding the UP crew, even though it is daylight.

This eastbound coal train loaded at the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch. For all intents and purposes, the West Elk Mine is the only mine remaining in Colorado that still loads trains. The train will cut out its mid-train swing helpers before continuing east onto the KP (the Limon Sub).

A C44ACM, rebuilt from a C44AC-CTE, leads an eastbound coal load on Bypass 2. The I-76 overpass is the bridge in the background. Ahead at Pecos, the two mid-train swing helpers will be cut out and the train will continue east in a 2x(0)x1 configuration.

While coal has almost entirely disappeared from the Moffat, UP still runs the occasional coal train from the North Fork Branch east over the Moffat. Here, a 95-car coal load rolls east through the OS at C&S Jct, entering Bypass 2. The outbound crew is coming out of North Yard right now and will meet the train at Pecos.

While much of the area around Union Station has significantly changed in the last two decades, the core structure of Union Station itself has not. It has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. While the exterior has changed little, the interior has been remodeled extensively. In particular, it now houses the Crawford Hotel.
