Yard Shots Union Pacific
The area around has changed a lot over the decades, but by-and-large North Yard has remained the same for those same decades. This, along with Roper in Salt Lake, was Rio Grande’s main classification yard. Under SP, the yard was packed full still as many trains ran on the Moffat from the Pacific Northwest to Texas. Under UP, however...particularly in the last few years...traffic has dropped off quite a bit.

This shot offers a good overview of Utah Junction at the north end of North Yard. The tracks on the right, with the lighter ballast, are BNSF. They funnel down and cross UP’s Belt Line before continuing on to the Front Range Sub. UP’s Main is the first track to the left of BNSF’s and is the mainline that heads west to the Moffat and beyond.Tracks to left of that are part of North Yard.

UP 1996 was painted in honor of Southern Pacific, which became part of Union Pacific in September 1996. About four years after that merger, UP 4395 was delivered as part of 1,000 unit order of SD70Ms. Crazy to think it has been nearly 24 years since UP and SP merged.

UP 1996, one of UP’s six heritage units, sits on one of the ready tracks in North Yard on a June afternoon. It is, perhaps, somewhat ironic that exactly 14 years ago that UP 1989, the Rio Grande Heritage Unit, sat a few hundred yards from this location under a tarp, waiting to be unveiled! UP 1996 is, of course, Southern Pacific’s heritage unit.

Here is a real sign of the downturn in the economy thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic! North Yard has far more yard tracks open than it has filled right now. One of the tracks (the one that is mostly tank cars with some white covered hoppers at the end) is the end of a train. The MNYNP is about to depart for North Platte, NE and Bailey Yard.

A pair of SD40-2s, saddled with switching duties, come to a stop on the "third rail" in North Yard near the yard office. A GP48-2 and another SD40-2 sit on an engine track a few tracks over. The relative lack of cars in the parking lot at the yard office is an indication of the slim economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

UP 4014 backs down the North Yard Siding and underneath the signal bridge at Pecos Street. A brakeman is protecting the shove back in to the North Yard Storage Yard. The Big Boy will spend the night on the track knows as "Pig 2". This is a reference to many years ago when intermodal ran over the Moffat and was loaded and unloaded there.

UP 4014 is producing a lot of steam as it approaches CP DS004 - the Pecos Street Crossover - on Bypass 2. The train will continue toward the Moffat, pulling just passed C&S Junction in order to back down the North Yard Siding and in to the Storage Yard for the night.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
Overnight, UP 1989 led a coal empty down the Greeley Sub. The train is headed for the Savage load out in Utah. Alas, the train needed an air brake inspection and therefore had to pull in to North Yard rather than stay on a bypass track. As a result, the train departed with UP 1989 trailing, rather than leading.

On a beautiful January morning, the California Zephyr approaches Pecos Crossover on Main 3. In mid-2018, Amtrak executives had said that no long distance Amtrak trains would run over any stretch of track that did not have Positive Train Control (PTC) implemented. Fortunately, they backed down on that as several train, including the Zephyr, would have been impacted. The former Grande between Grand Junction and Helper does not have PTC (and UP currently has no plans to add it).
