Trains departing UP's North Yard to the east do so on the Belt Industrial Lead. About a half mile east from the yard, this manifest is approaching the control point at Broadway. It is here that the Bypass tracks (visible to the right) converge with the Belt Lead. The Bypass tracks were built around 2004 as a shortcut for coal trains that did not need to enter North Yard. Note the old water tank at Utah Junction visible in the distance to the right.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
North Yard in Denver was originally built by the Denver and Salt Lake. It then went to the Rio Grande, followed by Southern Pacific, and now, Union Pacific. There are around 25 yard tracks in North Yard. As you can see, there are cars on most of the tracks, although many of the tracks are not particularly full. If you note the light blue building in the distance (with one white door and one blue door)...this was the car repair facility (called the RIP facility - Repair In Place). On December 5, 2023, UP management decided to close the shop. 13 car repairmen were immediately laid off and escorted off the property! No more car repair facilities in Denver. North Platte is now the closest for repairs.

BNSF's afternoon "Beer Run" is headed out of Denver, currently on UP's Main 2 between Prospect Jct and Fox Jct. The train will be on UP for just a few miles before entering the Golden Sub at C&S Junction. Only 3:30pm, yet the light feels like it is practically gone.

Yard Shots BNSF
A pair of second generation (but certain rebuilt) EMDs switch the west end of the yard at 31st Street. The power is currently the bridge that crosses over the South Platte river as it backs up with a string of double stacks. I don't think I've ever seen double stacks at 31st Street, as they are generally handled out of Rennicks Yard.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Amtrak
In just a matter of about 40 after departing Denver, Amtrak moves from an urban scene to rural mountains. Here, about 15 minutes after leaving Union Station, the Zephyr is still in the midst of the iron jungle, passing alongside UP's North Yard (to the right) and BNSF's intermodal facility (Rennicks Yard) on the left.

Just west (geographically north) of Fox Junction, the westbound Zephyr is just about an hour late. The train is on the only track under dispatcher (CTC) control. All other tracks in the shot (in the foreground, anyway) are yard limits.

UP's North Yard to Green River manifest is passing by the Suncor refinery in Commerce City, ready to start its journey north on the Greeley Sub. The train occasionally has work that needs to be done between Denver and Speer along the Greeley. But not today! It will be a straight shot for the crew.

Three mid-train swing helpers are about to be cut out of the middle of an eastbound loaded oil train. You can see the crossover is reversed from Bypass 1 to Bypass 2. The engines will move east of the OS at Pecos, and then run back west to C&S to take one of the two units off the back of the oil train as well.

Three units are on the point of a westbound coal empty on Bypass 1. In the distance, I-76 crosses over the tracks. The train is currently tied down, waiting on a crew to take the train west over the Moffat. UP 2566 is an ES44AC that was purchased as a Tier-4 credit unit.

A trio of UP GEs lead a westbound coal empty on Bypass 1 just east of C&S Junction. This is a scene that was far more common 15 years ago. Today, it is more common to find oil trains on Bypass 1 and 2, but coal trains still occasionally show up, such as on this day.
