UP 844, UP 1989, and the Frontier Days train approach a clear signal at the south end of La Salle. After a brief stop in Greeley, the train won't be making any additional stops until it arrives at its station stop in Denver.

After shooting Cheyenne Frontier Days at Nunn, it was impossible to get ahead of it again north of Greeley. However, the train made a stop in Greeley to check out 844 and make sure everything was running correctly. That stop allowed us to hop ahead of the train and setup for this shot of the train coming down the main in La Salle.

Despite the "nose only a mother could love", I have to admit that the SD70ACe is really starting to grow on me. It'll never replace such units as the SD40-2 or even the SD70M, but it not too shabby!

Talk about quick turnaround! Although you can't tell from the pictures alone, these two units are the same two I shot at dawn at Henderson. Apparently, the power was serviced quickly and kicked right back out of town!

It is late afternoon as this southbound (empty) rail train sits in the siding at La Salle. The train has already met one northbound and will have to wait for two more before continuing south.

This is my favorite picture of the day! A pair of AC4400CW's lead up a northbound manifest on the approach to La Salle. In this 300mm shot, the 14,259-foot-tall Longs Peak stands tall in the distance.

At the south end of La Salle, a coal empty headed for the North Fork Branch continues on a clear signal. The Greeley Sub is one spot where you can see coal empties meeting each other and/or coal loads meeting each other! Powder River Trains and Colorado Coal trains can meet each other from time to time.

Now here is a unit that you definitely do not see every day. This is one of only three remaining GP40P-2's! Three of these units were delivered to Southern Pacific for use in the San Francisco area. The extended section at the back contained a steam generator. Of course, that equipment has long since been removed, but the unusual body still exists.

UP keeps several SD60s and SD40-2s in La Salle for use on some of the locals that run during the week. One such local is the Fort Collins local that runs Monday through Friday from La Salle to Fort Collins.

This SW1500 was coming up on its 41st birthday in this picture. It started out as SP 2548 and stayed scarlet and gray until shortly after the UP/SP merge. It moved to UP 1132 on February 18, 1997 and stayed that way until it was retired on February 24, 2009. Here, it is being transported to North Platte, NE. From there, it will move to Fort Worth, TX where it will be turned over to Econo-Rail.

A trio of elephant-style AC units lead the northbound North Yard, CO to North Platte, NE manifest. After making a brief stop in La Salle to switch out some cars, the train is now on the roll again.

After running through both Greeley and La Salle, the ZLADV can finally accelerate a bit as it continues south toward Denver along US-85. The journey south from Greeley runs slightly upgrade, so the unit will be working for the balance of the trip.

This is, to date, the best shot of UP 6936 that I have. Would have been really cool to see these in mainline freight service! I actually really think the corn fields in the background add something to the shot, don't you!?

My favorite shot of the day for the Cheyenne Frontier Days special. The lighting was really good and UP 844 is putting off enough smoke to make it look nice and classy! The train is just south of downtown La Salle.

This is definitely the kind of shot that needs to be in black and white. My dad managed to get roster shots of nearly ever Rio Grande unit back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. He always shot in black and white, so even with the UP patch, this reminds me of those shots.
