At the very north end of the Greeley Subdivision, this Z-Train is starting to head toward Denver after a crew change at Speer. The train is passing underneath I-25 just south of Speer Jct. The train you see above in the distance is indeed the back part of this same train.

The Borie Cutoff is a (roughly) 3 1/2 mile long stretch of single track that connects Main 1 and 2 of UP's Overland Route with Main 3 and the Greeley Sub at Speer Jct. This allows trains that were on the Overland but are headed for Denver, such as this Z-Train, to head straight for Speer for their crew change from Mains 1 and 2. If you look in the distance, the bridge you see actually crosses over Mains 1 and 2.

Although it may not look like it based on the auto racks, this is actually a Z-train. The ZLBDV (Long Beach, CA to Denver, CO). Traditionally, when you think of a Z-train, you probably think of intermodal cars (double stacks and piggy backs). This train does have those, but they are behind the auto racks, out of sight around the corner. The train is on the Borie Cutoff, which is a shortcut from the Overland main to Speer Jct where the Greeley Sub connects in.

VIA 2214 is an SCV-42, built by Siemens in Florin, CA. The unit is a variant of the Charger series of locomotives produced by Siemens, similar to the ALC-42s that Amtrak is currently receiving. VIA rail, the Canadian counterpart to Amtrak, ordered 32 of these trainsets in December 2018, which are slowly being delivered.

You are looking at a Siemens-made cab control commuter rail unit. This unit alone has no prime mover or traction motors. It is indeed just a cab control car that passengers can ride in. It is headed for VIA rail in Canada.

A trainset built by Siemens and destined for VIA Rail (Canada's passenger railroad) is on the move on Main 2 at Archer Curve just east of Cheyenne. The equipment will be turned over from UP to either Canadian National or Canadian Pacific at Chicago.

The reason for my journey to Wyoming on this Sunday! UP is transporting a VIA rail trainset and two Amtrak commuter cars from Florin, CA (the Siemens plant) to Chicago, IL. A single UP units leads the rather unique trainset through Archer Curve just east of Cheyenne.

A long covered hopper train approaches the (now closed) Pershing Blvd bridge with a C44ACM, SD70ACe, and ET44C4 on the point. UP 6160 was originally SP 167. It has undergone several upgrades since its time as an SP unit. It is now capable of being a DPU unit. Originally, SP 100-199 did not have DPU equipment installed.

UP 6160 leads a westbound covered hopper train on Main 1 toward Archer Curve just east of Cheyenne. If you blasted off that yellow paint on UP 6160, you'd end up finding some scarlet and gray! UP 6160 started life as SP 167.

At the very north end of the Greeley Sub (at Speer Jct), the eastbound California Zephyr crosses over BNSF's Front Range Subdivision as the Zephyr begins the final leg of its detour route between Salt Lake City and Denver.

Both UP and BNSF have lines between Denver and Cheyenne. Here at Speer Jct is where they happen to cross one another at a grade separation.

Just west of Speer Jct, a rerouted eastbound California Zephyr sits stopped, waiting on Main 3. A new UP engineer just got on board the train and are preparing to depart for the Greeley Sub south to Denver. There is an Amtrak crew on board, but a UP "pilot" engineer is needed to ride with the Amtrak engineers as they are not as familiar with the route.
