One of my favorite places to shoot is at the bridge just east of Tolland. Here, the tracks cross South Boulder Creek and the Continental Divide is visible in the background. Two SD70M's, a C40-8, and a AC4066CW lead the westbound MNYPV on a beautiful June morning.

Do you see the Ski Train in this shot? Definitely not a major component of the picture, but the Kansas (the last car of the Ski Train) can be seen in the distance between Tolland and East Portal. The little yellow school house sits quietly in the valley below the Continental Divide.

Don't you just feel a little refreshed after this shot? Half way through the siding at Cliff, the tracks cross over South Boulder Creek on this wooden trestle. The Kansas crosses the quick-moving water as it continues its journey west.

In 2000, UP moved 69 SD40-2's from numbers in the high 3000's and low 4000's to the 9882 series. All of these units were "B-units" (meaning they could not lead a train), and all but twelve of these former Missouri Pacific units have been retired. UP 9885 is one of the twelve that are still on UP's roster.

BNSF's Provo to Denver manifest (comprised primarily of tank cars) slows to stop at the grade crossing near the east end of East Portal siding. The train will switch crews so the fresh crew can take the train all the way to Denver.

An eastbound coal load makes its way east out of the Moffat Tunnel. The train met an westbound hirailer at East Portal. The hirailer was trying to make his way to Winter Park (via the tunnel) for track inspection.

UP 8487 leads the westbound MNYPV as it is about to enter the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The train is passing under a brand new camera tower that has been placed about 100 feet east of the east portal. There are at least five cameras on the new tower pointing in various directions.

Eight units, including a very new SD70ACe, lead the westbound MNYPV past the signal at the east end of East Portal. The train is running on an approach signal and will stop at the west end of East Portal for about ten minutes to wait for the tunnel to vent from the exhaust of Amtrak which passed by about ten minutes earlier.

The westbound California Zephyr charges west through freshly fallen snow at Tolland. Amtrak had a rough start to the day with power problems in Denver delaying it nearly two hours, plus a train stuck in emergency which added another hour onto the delay. It is about 1:15pm as Amtrak is approaching the Moffat Tunnel.

About a month ago now, UP discontinued the MNYRO (North Yard to Roper manifest) in favor of the MNYPV (North Yard to Provo manifest). Rio Grande's old Provo Yard is reportedly getting a lot of action now. The manifest will go to Provo, and then any cars headed for Roper will be forwarded on the MPVRO (Provo to Roper manifest). I was happy to find three SD70M's on the point...my personal favorite unit since the SD40(T)-2.

Winter lighting can sure play havoc with a photographer! The sun was far enough around the mountain to the south to illuminate the hill in the distance, but not quite far enough to the west yet to actually light the tracks. In any case, Amtrak 5 disappears into the 6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel.

For those of you that are familiar with some of your constellations may recognize Orion looking down upon the signal at the west end of Rollins! A full moon offers some illumination on the side of the control box. The green signal is for an eastbound MPVNY which is on the approach to Tolland.

With the old signals for the days of the Rio Grande quickly disappearing, it seemed that a night shot was in order! Just a few minutes past midnight, the signal at the west end of Rollins gives a clear indication for a eastbound MPVNY which has just exited the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel.

The MNYPH-30, led by UP 6798 approaches the east portal of tunnel 30. The train consisted primarily of hoppers loaded with sand, although there were a few other cars thrown into the consist. The train would ultimately tie down at Tolland to wait for a crew change. Note the coal to the left of lead unit from the derailment last winter (which trapped the Ski Train on the west side of the Moffat).

It is very nice to see solid consists of EMD's running on the Moffat again. I'm obviously bias toward EMD's because that's all the Grande ever owned, but there's just something about the hum of the turbocharger! Here, three SD70M's lead the MRONY-21 toward the west switch of Rollins on a clear signal.
