The train had been going around 55 MPH since Granby, but had to slow down to 25 MPH through the canyon. On the opposite side, the Zephyr will be able to accelerate back up to 70 MPH! The train is awaiting a westbound UP passenger special, which had a bit of a delay due to a 15 MPH slow order that was a mile and a half long. In Colorado, coal loadings are down nearly 85% compared to where they were ten years ago! For quite some time now, Energy Mine has only been loading trains for customers within Colorado. Looks like there may be a new customer though with this train. The train originated from Curtis Bay, MD! Not sure if it is a one time thing, or if Energy has found a tiny bit of new life. While most shots come from the south side of the rails, we are looking down on this eastbound from the north side of the rails just at the mouth of the east end of the canyon. You can see US-40 on the opposite side of the Colorado River. A few hundred feet more and the train will knock down the clear signal at the west switch of Sulphur. The MNYRO follows the head water of the Colorado River west through Byers Canyon with a lot of the water's top still frozen. You may have guessed at this point that this is a former Rio Grande GP40-2...and you'd be correct. However, this was the first Rio Grande unit to be assimilated in to (and painted in) Union Pacific yellow. In mid-1997, DRGW 3122 had the "honor" of receiving the first repaint on Rio Grande's roster. The unit has somehow managed to keep it's original UP number (5245) and has also managed to stay in Colorado working on locals for the past 15 years, working out of Colorado Springs, North Yard (in Denver) and Grand Junction.
