The westbound Zephyr was delayed over four hours in Nebraska, due to a "mechanical issue", according to Amtrak. Not sure precisely what the mechanical issue was, but due to that and a few other delays, the Zephyr is six hours late as it rounds the bend on the approach to Eisele (Clay).

The westbound Zephyr is getting nearing the end of a 10 MPH slow order and, as a result, both P42DCs are throttling up and they both kick up a bit of exhaust. The Zephyr is on the south edge of Big Ten, and is headed into the afternoon light. A bit unusual to have these lighting conditions for the westbound Zephyr, but it is running six hours late.

The westbound Zephyr has slowed to about 10 MPH to comply with one of many slow orders that have been established on the Moffat in the past few weeks. This afternoon, there are some fast-moving clouds, with shadows moving quickly through the scene. Fortunately, this shot was taken just before the shadow at the top fully encompassed the scene.

The westbound Zephyr is running six hours late this morning as it heads west out of Leyden on a sunny afternoon. The first Superliner behind the baggage car is the crew car (the transition sleeper). Looks like a crew member is catching a bit of fresh air.

One final look at the eastbound Amtrak special as it makes its way through Barbara's Gulch eastbound. Was pretty cool to see the Amtrak Cascades trainset here in Colorado. The trainset is headed to Pueblo for testing at the TTC. After testing is complete, when the trainset is ready to head to the Pacific Northwest, it might just head back west on the Moffat...

After meeting UP's MNYGJ, and with a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, this Amtrak special with the Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset start to roll east on the main track, the sun quickly setting behind the Rocky Mountains under partly cloudy skies to the west.

The sun has just dipped behind the mountains to the west as a westbound UP manifest, the thrice weekly MNYGJ, rolls west in the siding. The manifest was entirely composed of covered hoppers, and had an interesting configuration with three units on the point, and a single SD70ACe as a mid-train swing helper!

An eastbound Amtrak special, carrying an Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset, sits stopped at a red signal on the main at Rocky. The train is waiting on a westbound UP MNYGJ, which is going quite a bit slower than the dispatcher would have liked. The dispatcher was hoping the manifest would have been in the siding waiting for the special by the time the special arrived.

This Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset is currently stopped on the main at Rocky, waiting for a westbound UP manifest. The AIRO trainsets will, in general, consist of a ALC-42E locomotive, a baggage/coach car, cafe car, business class car, a few standard coaches, and a cab/coach car.

Here is a close look at AMTK 70001, a Siemens ALC-42E. It sports the Amtrak Cascades paint scheme, which includes a "Washington State Department of Transportation" marking on it, as Amtrak Cascades is a joint venture (state-sponsored) version of Amtrak between Amtrak and the state of Washington.

I like the image of Mount Rainier that is part of the paint scheme on this Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset. The individual cars on this trainset are semi-permanent components of the trainset as a whole. The can be separated, such as for repairs, but they are generally designed to remain together.

This is a sample of one of the cars that are part of the semi-permanent trainset on the new AIRO train that will eventually wind up in the Pacific Northwest.

This is a closeup look at AMTK 79501, the final car on the new Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset. This is a Cab/Coach car that will work as part of a push-pull operation. It has 88 seats in the car. This is a new trainset built by Siemens in California.

After meeting its counterpart, the MNYGJ, at Rocky, this eastbound UP manifest (the MGJNY) is headed for North Yard in Denver right at sunset. Clouds largely cover the western sky as a bit of sunset colors appear behind the train and the Rocky Mountains.
