The eastbound Zephyr is departing Rocky on the main after meeting a westbound oil train and the westbound Zephyr, sitting in the siding. Winds gusting as high as 90 MPH in the previous 24 hours have taken their toll in area. Not the hood of the signal on the right side of the frame, blown off to the side on the face of the signal.

The morning westbound Zephyr is actually the afternoon westbound Zephyr as it is running 6 1/2 hours late. The signal at east Rocky looks like it is showing a "red over dark" indication. However, the bottom signal is actually flashing red. The train has a restricting signal in to the siding at Rocky, behind a westbound oil train.

Three units lead UP's thrice weekly manifest from Grand Junction to Denver, the only regularly scheduled manifest UP still runs on the Moffat. The train passes through the OS at East Rocky. One thing I never quite understood about East Rocky. When UP added their control point designations, East Rocky was given CP DS016. However, it is much closer to milepost 17, so it seems like CP DS017 would have been more logical.

The crew on the westbound Zephyr just changed from channel 14 to channel 23 here at the east end of Rocky. The train is now entering the siding on a Diverging Advanced Approach (red over flashing yellow). A BNSF oil train is sitting on the main, but is clear of the west switch, so the Zephyr will really be delayed.

The morning Zephyr, running right on time, knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. The pair of P42DCs leads a baggage car and seven Superliners. A typical consist for the California Zephyr these days.

An eastbound coal empty rolls east out of Rocky on a clear (green) signal, ready to dive in to Barbara's Gulch. A nice pair of matched SD70ACes lead the train.

A UP oil train knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, meeting BNSF's eastbound Provo-Denver trackage rights manifest. Once the oil train clears the east switch, the manifest will get a clear signal to head east.

BNSF's eastbound Provo-Denver, with a Canadian Pacific unit second out on the head end, just had a fresh crew show up and get on board to take the train in to Denver. Meanwhile, the westbound California Zephyr is right on time as it meets the train, heading west.

Now that it is back on the mainline, the West Local will be able to speed up to 45 MPH on the track not far ahead. A bit faster than the 5-10 MPH it was restricted to on the Rocky Spur. On the upper-right side of the shot, you can see the grade crossing (protected by a stop light) where the Rocky Spur crosses CO-93. The local was just up at the crossing a short time ago.

A westbound UP oil empty sits stopped just east of the east end of Rocky. The train has been looking at a red signal for close to two hours due to a BNSF coal load that is broken down ahead. Shortly after this shot was taken, the BNSF coal load would roll back between switches at Rocky on the main, and the oil empty would get a light to head in to the siding around the load.

At the east end of Rocky, there is a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal for a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo. Note the switch bent for the siding. The train will hold in the siding to allow the Zephyr to run around it.

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. When UP took over the Moffat after the UP/SP merger, UP assigned control point IDs to every control point in addition to their name. For example, East Rocky was given the ID "CP DS016". The "CP" stands for "Control Point". The "DS" represents "Denver and Salt Lake", the original owner of the line. The "016", in theory, represents the nearest milepost. However, East Rocky is actually around milepost 17.5...so "CP DS017" would have made more sense. An interesting little enigma that lasts to this day.

It is not particularly often that I get the opportunity to get shots of the eastbound Zephyr in January with this much light here at Rocky! Extreme winter weather in western states has been playing havoc on the rails and, as a result, the Zephyr is running just over 17 hours late. Hopefully, it'll have an opportunity to make up a little bit of that time on the way to Chicago. However, weather in the mid-west hasn't been great either, so making up time does not seem likely!
