As this eastbound BNSF manifest approaches the photographer, the conductor opens the windows and gives a friendly wave. I actually spoke with this conductor briefly up at Cliff. He let me know that they were waiting in the siding for a westbound that was having engine troubles. He was a very nice guy. Now, he is only 17 miles away from home and has clear signals the rest of the way in to town.

This eastbound BNSF manifest passes over the east switch at Rocky, roughly 17 miles away from its destination in Denver. If you look closely, you will notice some lighter colored ballast underneath the lead unit of the train. The frog was just recently replaced by maintenance crews and some new ballast was put down as well to help with erosion from lost of precipitation.

Got snow? This eastbound is leaving Rocky and about to head in to Barbara's Gulch. There are some fairly fresh tire tracks in the snow from UP maintenance vehicles headed for Rocky the day before.

Winter Wonderland! The day before the last day of February, the City of Denver set a record for the most snowfall in history for the month of February. 22.2" fell this February, which is ironic because ten days earlier, it was shaping up to be one of the driest February's in history. Okay, enough weather talk. BNSF's Provo to Denver manifest heads east at East Rocky through the roughly 5" of fresh snow.

In the past, the departure of the MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Roper, UT) was somewhat predictable, typically departing North Yard between 7am and 8am. For the last year or so, it has been much harder to predict. It has been departing anywhere between 6am and 3pm. On this chilly February morning, the train is about to knock down the signal at East Rocky five minutes before 7 o'clock in the morning. On board for the journey west is an east coast visitor!

Clouds in the eastern sky block the barely-risen sun, offering an interesting back light for the westbound MNYRO. The train has just exited the west end of Barbara's Gulch (passing beneath CO-93), and is now rounding the curve toward the east switch of Rocky, ready to knock down the clear signal.

This coal load is running in a typical 2x3x1 configuration. These three mid-train swing helpers were added to the train in Glenwood Springs. They assisted the train in its climb up the west slope of the Continental Divide. Upon arriving in Denver, the units will be cut out of the train and serviced. The train will continue east with two units on the point and a sole DPU on the tail end.

After the UP/SP merger in 1996, UP added specific designations for controls points, beyond just their names. As you can see on the box to the right, East Rocky has been designated as DS016. The "DS" came from "Denver and Salt Lake", the railroad that originally built the Moffat. A coal load passes by on its journey east.

At the east switch of Rocky, trains switch radio channels as well as dispatchers. Eastbounds, such as this one, move from DS-82 to DS-86 and change from channel 23/23 to channel 14/14.

This C44/60AC has a shield and wings on the nose, although the shield is rather faded. This particular unit was once a 6000 horsepower AC6000CW. It's 6000 HP HDL prime mover has since been changed out for a standard 4400 HP FDL prime mover. The train is coming through the switch at East Rocky.

Say hello so the SD70AH. What makes this unit different from an SD70ACe? 7,000 pounds! For a long time, various railroads have, at times, increased the weight of certain locomotives to try to increase their tractive effort. Such is the case with the SD70AH. EMD increased the thickness of the steel frame, adding the 7,000 pounds.

Interestingly, I got a picture of UP 8923 back in 2007. That was a different unit, however. At that time, UP 8923 was an SD90MAC that was waiting to be sold off. Check out the picture in the "Additional Photos" below.

Ten years ago, I'm not sure anyone would have predicted that unit coal trains on the Moffat would be on the decline while unit oil trains would be on the rise! A very new (delivered in 2014) SD70AH leads this particular set of oil cans at East Rocky.

As more and more BNSF units painted in the "New Image" scheme appear, it is becoming less and less common to find units painted in the original "Heritage" scheme. However, BNSF's Provo, UT to Denver, CO (trackage rights) manifest had one on this sunny August afternoon.

Getting a little artsy, this shot is focused in on a lone sunflower (on this side of the tracks) as an eastbound BNSF manifest rounds the curve out of Rocky, headed into Barbara's Gulch.

It is getting to be late in the afternoon as this eastbound BNSF manifest rolls through the OS at the east switch of Rocky. At this point, the crew will switch from channel 2323 to channel 1414 and move from UP DS-82 to UP DS-86. Five GEs are in the command of the trains, which is primarily composed of tank cars. (Note: Channel 1414 being used between Prospect Jct and Rocky for DS-86 is a recent change. It had been channel 9292, but was changed due to the amount of radio traffic on 9292).
