They typically weigh somewhere around 7,000 tons and that is all uphill between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel. Here, a ballast train has a clear signal at the east switch of Rocky. The weather condition were deteriorating rapidly with the first few snow flakes just starting to fall. The Denver/Roper trains lately are led by the kind of AC power you see on most coal trains. Although there are only two units on the point, there was indeed a third (DPU) unit - an SD9043MAC - on the end of the train. Yep, it happened for a very short time between the fall of 1997 and the deactivation of most of the C30-7's in 1998 and 1999. This was also before BNSF started using DPU on its westbound manifests on the Moffat. Manned helpers would push the train up the hill to East Portal where they would cut off and return to Denver.
