The westbound Zephyr crosses over Wadsworth Blvd in the heart of the Denver suburb of Arvada. There are actually two bridges crossing Wadsworth here. Wadsworth here was originally four lanes. A project to widen the road to six lanes in 1995 required a new bridge be built for a shoofly for the tracks. Afterward, the old bridge was torn down and a second bridge was built. Once complete, the shoofly was removed. Now, nearly 30 years later, the second bridge remains. Unused.

The closest BNSF has come to offering up any type of heritage unit are these ES44ACs. Ten of them sport this special scheme that features the heralds of the railroads that merged to former Burlington Northern, plus the herald for Santa Fe.

The city of Arvada has around 125,000 residents and is zoned almost entirely residential. UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub cuts through the middle of Arvada neighborhoods, paralleling Oberon Road in this particular shot. The Rockies that the train just conquered rise high on the horizon.

Seven miles into its (roughly) 57 mile journey to Winter Park, the first Summer Ski Train of 2008 has a clear signal at CP DS007 in Arvada. In addition to passing the signal, the train is about to cross over Pierce Street.

A closeup shot of the axle-mounted generator on Rio Grande caboose 01490. The more modern cabooses took advantage of the turning of the wheels to turn a generator to charge the batteries for power. I don't know if the generator still works, but the equipment to power it on the outside is still in place.

In this view of caboose DRGW 01490, you can see a bit of the original one-stripe scheme coming through the black "age" of the caboose. Some have speculated that the P-Burg local (running west out of P-Burg) will use the caboose for its moves. Reportedly, the interior of the caboose has been revamped, although the emergency brake valve has been removed.

1977 or 2007!? It may be a bit grungy and the original paint may be almost completely covered, but this is in fact DRGW 01490. A steel caboose built in August 1959. The caboose was on the back of the MNYPH-18, tied down on the Arvada Siding a few miles west of North Yard. The caboose is going to Phippsburg, the exact reason is not known.

An eastbound BNSF that I have not heard of previously came east on the Moffat on the Saturday. The train was a Grand Junction to Amarillo manifest (symbol: HGJCAMA) that will stop in Rennicks before continue south on the Joint Line later in the day.

UP 1989 makes only its third run west on the Moffat since it was unveiled in Denver in July. At Lamar street in Arvada (just shy of DS007), the train came to a stop for about 90 minutes while waiting for a second crew to come out of Denver. The second crew was for a westbound tied down in the siding at Plain.

The man standing on the back of the tank car is the engineer, conductor, and brakeman for this particular switch job. UPY 1160 is a Remote Controlled Locomotive. If you look, you can see the beltpack just above the waste of the UP employee. He handles the switching and the power.

Although there were no extra cars trailing on the back of the westbound California Zephyr, number 5 had a compliment of three P42's on this morning as the train passes Arvada Siding. This siding, not controlled by CTC other than the power locks, is primarily used for coal interchange with BNSF for the Beer Train. The Beer Train will take the coal off the siding on its way out to Golden.

The sky in this image was not altered using a computer. I decided to use my polerizing filter (which I seldom use but should use more) to really bring out the blue in the sky. The contrast with the yellow leaves (and yellow AC's!) is great as this coal load is coming up on Carr Street.
