On a rather gloomy summer morning, the westbound Zephyr is running about three hours late due to some track maintenance projects that are creating some bottlenecks.

If you look closely, you can clearly see part of the train ahead as it is entering Leyden. That part of the train is just to the left of UP 9053. Because the train is 7,000-feet long, it couldn't fit in most of the sidings along the Moffat, Leyden included.

A very unusual site on the Moffat these days, a westbound contain train leaves Leyden, starting the climb up the hill. The train was called for 10:30am, but it took 5 1/2 hours before it finally departed North Yard.

It is very rare that the westbound Zephyr has light like this when it departs Denver! A BNSF derailment in Illinois resulted in the Zephyr being 10 hours late in to Denver. Here, the train is just west of Leyden and charging west through a "sucker hole" in the clouds.

A nice, long telephoto shot of BNSF 4978 draws in North Table Mountain in Golden in the distance. While it may not seem like it due to the compression effect, the mountain is actually over four miles away to the south!

Unfortunately, most of the fields in the Denver area spend much more of the year looking brownish and dead than they do green and alive. Fortunately, May is a time when they are typically the greenest! And passengers onboard the eastbound California Zephyr can enjoy the view as the train rolls by just west of Leyden, running right on time.

An eastbound UP manifest departs Leyden, making its way toward North Yard. Ironically, the train would end up getting stuck at Tennyson Street (just west of C&S Junction) for over four hours, waiting to get in to North Yard! It's westbound counterpart was blocking the way, keeping the train stuck on Main 2.

An extended California Zephyr heads west of Leyden on a sunny March morning. Amtrak this morning has ten Superliners, including two Sightseer Lounge cars! That's because the entire train has been rented out for an event known as "Train Jam". The entire train is carrying software gaming developers on their way to the "Game Developers Conference" in San Francisco. Because the entire train has been rented out, and because all passengers have a common destinations, Amtrak will not be stopping at most of the stations along the route. Mainly stations that include a crew change.

The eastbound MRONY is relatively short today, with two units on the point and a single DPU bringing up the rear. A UP ES44AC and a CSX AC4400CW lead the way toward a clear signal at Leyden.

The DPU on this BNSF manifest is a (relatively new) ET44C4. The train had an ET44C4 on the head end as well, although this is one of the very early versions of the ET44C4. You can tell as the second of long hood just ahead of the radiator housing is very boxy. In later versions of the model, that housing that sticks up is contoured to look a bit more natural with the rest of the radiator.
