The BNSF trains are a nice mix into the moffat traffic; here a clean warbonnet (BNSF 4703) leads an eastbound at Rocky.

This eastbound coal load is leaving the siding of Rocky behind as it moves east towards Barbara's Gulch. At this point, this train is also changing dispatchers, going from UP Dispatch 82 to UP Dispatch 86.

The Rocky Local, which runs west out of Denver on Tuesday's and Thursday's, is backing down the Rocky Spur toward the mainline. For many months, UP GP60s 1900 and 1901 (formerly Rio Grande 3154 and 3155) have worked the Rocky Local with a Rio Grande GP40-2 spliced in between. On this day, DRGW 3100 gets the duty.

It's all about the coal! As the westbound Ski Train climbs out of Rocky toward Big Ten, I took this shot looking northwest. Note the coal train on the siding at Rocky, and the eastbound coal train leaving Plain (entering tunnel 1) in the background.

C30-7's on the Moffat!? Yep, it happened for a very short time between the fall of 1997 and the deactivation of most of the C30-7's in 1998 and 1999. This was also before BNSF started using DPU on its westbound manifests on the Moffat. Manned helpers would push the train up the hill to East Portal where they would cut off and return to Denver. Here, C30-7 5047 leads the way back to town just east of Rocky.
