This exact scene (with two tracks) will not be possible too much longer! With the construction of a new underpass to connect 120th Avenue with CO-128, BNSF is moving the siding of Broomfield north of this location. Once that is complete, only the mainline will remain through this scene. This pair of B40-8s (551 being a B40-8W, of course) is slowly rolling south toward the south switch to wait for two northbounds.

While there are not a whole lot of them left, you can still find (standard cab) B40-8s running around on BNSFs system. This particular unit was delivered in June 1988 and is working with fellow (wide cab) B40-8 on the Longmont Switch, a local originating out of Longmont.

Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr is running right on time as it winds its way through the curves at the case of Coal Creek Canyon. The train is approaching the Blue Mountain Road grade crossing as seen from across the valley, further up the same road.

After making its way around Big Ten Curve, the eastbound California Zephyr is descending toward the west switch of Rocky on a clear signal. In the distance (to the right), the Denver skyline stands illuminated by the evening sun. As you can see, not all of Denver is receiving the same (direct) light thanks to scattered afternoon rain clouds.

It's 2015 and classic Rio Grande (well, Denver and Salt Lake) searchlight signal still stands at the east switch of Leyden. It was once explained to me by a member of UP's signal gang that the signal somehow ties in with the grade crossing at 80th Avenue, making it difficult to replace. I have no idea if that information was accurate, but regardless, it is good to find one spot that still has a classic signal standing!

The clouds on this particularly afternoon were really playing havoc with the camera. Dark shadows in the foreground (on the train) contrasted greatly with the brightly lit buildings of Denver in the distance. However, you take what you can get and, on this evening, what we can get is a westbound "Public Service" coal empty. This train is running from the Xcel Cherokee Power Station in Denver, headed for the Energy Mine loadout on the Craig Branch. Once the last generator at the Cherokee Power Station switches from coal to natural gas (scheduled for 2017), that will spell the end of this coal train on the Moffat.

In the past two years or so, SD70ACes have become far more commonplace on UP coal trains. While they are by no means "the norm", it is not unusual to see them anymore. For close to a decade, UP never ran them on coal trains, making them something of a rarity in Denver. Here, a fairly new SD70ACe leads a westbound coal empty toward a clear signal at the east switch of Rocky.

Sometimes when the clouds are out and messing up the perfect lighting, all you can do is try to get creative and work with it! a pair of AC4400CWs push on the tail end of this westbound coal empty past the control box at the east switch of Rocky.

This same train I actually shot earlier in day, being assembled (by these very two units) at the Cherokee Power Station in Denver. The train was assembled at the plant and taken across the Belt Industrial Lead to North Yard. There, four units were added to the rear of the train and the rear of the train became the front of the train! These two units were set up as DPUs and a fresh crew departed westbound, destined for the Craig Branch and Energy Mine.

After shooting this coal empty at Rocky, I headed west for Crescent to wait to get a shot of him there. However, after arriving at Crescent, I heard the train call up DS-82 and inform her that they were stopped at Plain to bring another unit online as they were having trouble climbing the 2% grade. So, I hopped back in the car and tried to make it back down to Plain in time to get a few pictures. Alas, the train started pulling about 90 seconds before I got up to the grade crossing. So, I had to settle for this going away shot of the DPUs as the push down the main toward Rainbow Cut. Ah, the one that got away!
