The train is quite long today, coming in at over 8,000 feet in the length. While the head end is over here at Fox, the tail is still in the yard over at 31st Street. The train is starting to pull up toward Utah Jct to clear up for the Zephyr, which is ready to head west (but currently blocked). The power, a UP unit, was uncoupled and parked a few hundred feet away. I am guessing that the inspection train will depart Monday morning. The Denargo wye connects BNSF's 31st Street Yard and UP's 36th Street Yard. About 15 years ago, it was upgraded to welded rail and the one grade crossing on the line was upgraded. Ironically, with UP now using 36th Street only for local preparation and storage, and not for classification, the wye is never used. The string of four units close to the camera is the power for the Beer Run that will head out to Golden later in the day. The GP40-2 and SD40-2 will serve as the power on the Golden Switch this week. With the merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern, the new railroad, CPKC, is starting to repaint its motive power. The manifest was working on pulling out of the yard, but the air test and DPU linking took longer than expected, and the Buck Lead was blocked by the manifest. Once the manifest cleared, the Zephyr could depart. In this shot, the BNSF Denver-Laurel is to the left of the Zephyr. The California Zephyr is, of course, on the move on the Moffat mainline with AMTK 171 and AMTK 203 for power. Behind the Zephyr is UP's MNYGR, ready to depart North Yard to head to the Greeley Sub and head north to Cheyenne before headed to Green River, WY. Another train that will also head through Cheyenne on its journey is BNSF's Denver-Laurel manifest. The BNSF manifest will, of course, head north on the Front Range Sub. However, this is not that same SD70M. When Union Pacific chose an SD70M to repaint as UP 1616 (the Abraham Lincoln unit), they chose to repaint UP 4015. About a year ago, UP decided to renumber UP 4392 as a "new" UP 4015. It received a fresh paint of coat in UP's newest scheme to go along with its new number. On this Sunday morning, it was sitting amongst a string of half dozen SD70Ms, all waiting to head to Cheyenne. The other SD70Ms are likely headed for long term storage. UP 4015 is probably just headed back to the roundhouse in Cheyenne to serve with UP 4014 again in the future. I always appreciate how good units look in fresh paint! I was happy this worked out as it has been quite a while since I've done any chasing on the Front Range Sub. The sub tends to be fairly dead most of the time. It carries way less traffic than the Moffat does. Here, the 8,000+ foot long manifest is just a few miles south of the south switch of Broomfield in Westminster. BNSF's Denver-Laurel has a trio of C44-9Ws, all still wearing Heritage 2 paint. The train is passing by Lower Church Lake (which hasn't actually been a lake in a few years; it is all dried up) and approaching the US-36 underpass. It was right at this location when, in 1985, northbound and southbound Burlington Northern trains collided head on, melting the steel of the bridge.
