The extension of the siding of Broomfield to the north is proceeding nicely! As you can see, the (concrete) ties and rails have been placed up to the new north switch. That's about 3,000 feet of track. Up next will be ballast to raise the siding up and smooth out the grade.

When laying new track, one of the things you need is ties! As BNSF has been working to extend the Broomfield siding to the north, this tie train was used to deliver ties as needed to the track gang. On this afternoon, the train was sitting in the siding, waiting to be needed. An SD70ACe is at one end and an ES44AC is at the other end, allowing the train to easily move either direction while working.

The crossing signals for what used to be Brainard Drive have been taken down and the tracks for the new north end of Broomfield siding are in place. Ballast will be coming next. I'm only guessing, but I'll bet the grade crossing on the main (where cars used to cross the tracks) will be kept. It should make for a nice place for hyrailers to set on and set off.

Some earth-moving equipment sits along the tracks of the newly installed (although not yet complete) Broomfield siding. In the distance, note the tracks curving away. This is BNSF's Lafayette Branch, which is served by the Longmont Switch (local) a couple times each week.

A view looking north (geographically west) along the new north end of the siding of Broomfield. The track has been laid, although ballast has not yet be placed beneath it.

On Monday, August 10th, the track gangs showed up and got the ties and track down for the new north end of Broomfield. The track gang works here to check a few ties before heading to lunch. Ballast will come next along with tamping and regulating. Not long after, it should be ready for trains!

While there are not a whole lot of them left, you can still find (standard cab) B40-8s running around on BNSFs system. This particular unit was delivered in June 1988 and is working with fellow (wide cab) B40-8 on the Longmont Switch, a local originating out of Longmont.

This exact scene (with two tracks) will not be possible too much longer! With the construction of a new underpass to connect 120th Avenue with CO-128, BNSF is moving the siding of Broomfield north of this location. Once that is complete, only the mainline will remain through this scene. This pair of B40-8s (551 being a B40-8W, of course) is slowly rolling south toward the south switch to wait for two northbounds.

A pair of GE B-units arrive at the siding of Broomfield, headed south. These units ran light out of Longmont in order to switch some along the Front Range Sub. The light power is headed to the south end of the siding where they will wait for two northbounds. This B40-8W was delivered new to Santa Fe in October of 1990.

The loaded Valmont coal train sits (tied down) in the siding at Broomfield. The train has cut the grade crossing at Nickel Street, a process that soon will not be necessary once the siding of Broomfield shifts to the north side of Nickel Street. The Valmont train is loaded at Energy Mine (on the Craig Branch). UP brings the train to Denver and then turns it over to BNSF. Often times, the train will run to Valmont with the UP power still on the train! In fact, this is the exact same train that I shot a few days earlier with an unpatched Espee leader. Alas, the Espee unit was removed in Denver.

On my lunch break, I ran up to Broomfield to see what progress was being made on the siding extension to the north. As you can see here, a gang is working at the (new) north end of the siding. Rumor has it a track gang is showing up to get to work on laying track. That makes sense as I saw two track tempers being unloaded from a flat bed truck as I was leaving to head back to the office.

BNSF runs a daily manifest (each way) between Denver, CO and Laurel, MT. On this particular July afternoon, a trio of GEs leads the northbound version of the train out of the siding at Broomfield. The train has a warrant as far as MP 38, south of Longmont. Before it gets there, however, maintenance (currently on the tracks) will clear up and the train will be able to continue north toward Cheyenne (its next crew change location).

This southbound coal empty has just crossed over what used to be Brainard Drive. the asphalt is now gone and the remnants of the road are barricaded, but the crossing is still active the train still had to use its horn at the crossing. You can see the northbound that it is meeting in the siding at Broomfield in the distance.

There has been a bit of a downturn in rail traffic in the last couple of months, but you can definitely still find leasers around, particularly on BNSF. These interesting (not necessarily colorful, as they are mainly gray) units, leased from CitiRail, are always fun to find on a train. Not sure how much longer their lease will last!

The southbound Valmont coal empty heads south alongside Midway Blvd on the approach to the north siding switch of Broomfield. It is a beautiful (and hot) August afternoon as Longs Peak stands tall in the distance. The Valmont train has already received a warrant from the Front Range Sub dispatcher to proceed south to Denver (after stopping to align the south siding switch at Broomfield for the main track).

You might think something about this SD70MAC looks a bit strange. I thought so too. The nose looked too orange somehow. Then it hit me...the headlight is above the cab! On every BNSF SD70MAC that I remember seeing (prior to this one), the headlight is on the nose.
