This eastbound manifest is about to knock down the signal at the west end of Leyden and head into the siding. DS-86 informed the train that BNSF's 31st Street Yard is not ready for the train, so they'll have to wait at Leyden until the yard can take them.

New ties waiting to be installed lay along the right-of-way as an eastbound BNSF manifest (with a UP power-sharing unit) rolls by. These ties will likely be installed during the upcoming eight day closure of the Moffat, which starts October 1st.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest, with a boat load of power, is headed toward Leyden on a rainy September morning. The train has 11 units on the head end, although only the first three units are actually online. The trailing eight units are DIC (Dead In Consist).

A westbound BNSF sand train makes its way west up and around Big Ten Curve. This is the south side of Big Ten, on the approach to Eisele. The train is about to curve to the right (and north) to the east switch. Alas, I did not have time to hang out to get any closer pictures of this westbound.

A westbound BNSF manifest with three units on the point and a pair of units DPU's on the back makes its way through the S-Curves at Coal Creek. The hill leading down to the tracks is part of Jefferson County Open Space.

UP's has maintenance ongoing on the Moffat until 12:30-1:00pm at the moment. That has meant that, once that time hits, there tends to be a flood of westbound released out of Denver. BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest is approaching the grade crossing at Blue Mountain.

This picture is a little bit like the book game "Where's Waldo"! Can you spot the train is the scene? A westbound BNSF Denver-Provo manifest is holding on the main at Leyden. You can see his headlight toward the lower-left quadrant of the image. The train is waiting for the Zephyr to run around it through the siding.

The Brush Sub dispatcher has done a great job keeping this Q-Train running on clear signals ever since leaving New Hillrose, north of Brush. Here, the three GE units on the head end knock down the signal at West Tonville. The west switch is located nearly a small pond that helps to offer a nice foreground.

On this first day of fall, the further west I travelled back toward Denver, the thicker the cloud coverage got. When I setup for this shot, the scene was bathed in great lightning. Alas, a cloud blew in and added shade to the scene a mere 30 seconds prior to the arrival of the train! Ah well...the curve at Keensburg still looks mighty fine, even in the shade.

This particular Q-Train that BNSF runs on the Brush Sub is something of a "potpourri" train. The makeup of the train is one of the more interesting ones I've seen. Box cars, covered hoppers, open hoppers, tank cars, centerbeam flats, TOFCs, and COFCs...all found on the same train! Most of the time, intermodal is kept separate from other manifest traffic. Not the case on this Alliance, TX-bound train.

Evidence of some of the maintenance that BNSF has sunk in to the Brush Sub is visible lying alongside the right-of-way in this shot. Piles of old wood ties and tie plates are waiting to be picked up by a scrap train at Wiggins.

Hard to believe that the GE "Evolution Series" engine (in all its various forms) has been around for nearly 15 years now. And man has it proven to be a popular model! GE has produced of 4,000 units just for BNSF and UP alone! More than 7,000 units have been produced for all North American railroads combined. Here, an ES44C4 leads a westbound Q-Train in between Brush and Fort Morgan.

Several new trains have appeared on in Colorado in the past year or so. BNSF has started some new intermodal service between the Pacific Northwest and the Gulf Coast. There is also a Q-Train also runs to Alliance, TX on the Brush Sub. Here, that Q-Train is just coming in to the town of Brush. The Brush Sub will converge with the Akron Sub (although it will remain the Brush Sub) here in Brush.

Like virtually all plains towns in the United States, the small town of Otis has a water tower standing tall over the town, the town's name proudly painted on the tower. This BNSF stack train is crossing one of the two grade crossing in the town as it journeys east toward its destination of Omaha, NE.
