These same two cars actually made an appearance on the back of #5 on this same Thursday exactly one year ago (June 15, 2023). Henry and Warren R. Henry) are bringing up the tail end of the westbound Zephyr this morning. These are probably the two most common private cars to appear on the Zephyr in recent years. Amtrak greatly increased their fees for hauling private cars, and imposed many restrictions on where they could be picked up or dropped off. There are two private cars on the end of the train that were added during the station stop in Denver. The height of the dam is increasing by 131 feet, which will increase the capacity roughly three times over! The project still has a couple years remaining. The SD70M-2 was not widely popular, with only 331 being produced between 2005 and 2011. The majority of the units went to Canadian National and Norfolk Southen. None of those 331 units went to western railroads (UP, BNSF, etc). By comparison, over 2,000 SD70ACes have been produced and are still in the EMD catalog in 2024. Amtrak westbound Zephyr meeting an eastbound coal train that has a Canadian National SD70M-2 bringing up the tail end. At first glance, you might (reasonably) assume that this is an SD70ACe. However, it is actually an SD70M-2.
