The train made up a bit of that time east of Denver, but was still about 50 minutes late departing west out of Denver. The nine car train (plus a power car on the very end) appears to be sold out, which is great news (of course) for the train. First, the lead unit is P40DC #824. Now, technically, this unit has been rebuilt to P42DC standards, but the number makes it a bit unusual as not many (ex) P40DCs are still running on Amtrak's roster. The second oddity is the lack of a baggage car. Interestingly, running without a baggage car tends to be the norm for the Southwest Chief, but that is far less common with the Zephyr. The train is in the Tunnel District, though still able to see the front range as it heads geographically north, and moves between Tunnels 3 and 4. The west switch of Plain is also a check point for the Zephyr, and if you have your scanner with you, you can hear the crew call out "check point". It took about 90 minutes to get from East Portal to this spot, rolling slow as UP oil trains typically do.
