DPUs on a westbound coal load pass underneath a brand new signal bridge on the east edge of BNSF's Denver yard. The train is running on a new track just put in this year (2015) as part of a project to increase the length of BNSF's coal tracks. Another new track will be laid (to the left of these two in the shot) later this year.

A BNSF SD70ACe and a KCS ES44AC lead a westbound coal load down the main just outside BNSF's Denver Yard. BNSF is sinking some money in the east end of the yard in 2015. The tracks called "Coal 1" and "Coal 2" (where westbound coal train will typically stop to recrew) are being extended. They will be long enough to support 140-car trains when construction is complete. As part of the construction, a new signal bridge has been installed! The signal on the left will be for the main and the other two signals for Coal 1 and Coal 2.

After meeting Amtrak at Leyden, DS-86 set up this BNSF manifest with a clear shot the rest of the way in to Denver. The train is on Main 2 and approaching a clear signal at C&S Junction. Although it will remain on the same physical train at C&S, it will switch from Main 2 to Main 3 and continue down to Prospect Jct where it will return to BNSF.

On a beautiful Sunday morning, an eastbound BNSF manifest descended the Moffat with a great looking BNSF Warbonnet on the point. Most of the Dash-9 Warbonnets are in the 600-700 series. However, roughly 20 wound up in the 4700 series (4700-4719). If you noticed only one ditch light lit up, that isn't because they are oscillating...the light on the left is burned out. The train is taking the siding to meet a (slightly late) California Zephyr.

The loaded Valmont coal train sits (tied down) in the siding at Broomfield. The train has cut the grade crossing at Nickel Street, a process that soon will not be necessary once the siding of Broomfield shifts to the north side of Nickel Street. The Valmont train is loaded at Energy Mine (on the Craig Branch). UP brings the train to Denver and then turns it over to BNSF. Often times, the train will run to Valmont with the UP power still on the train! In fact, this is the exact same train that I shot a few days earlier with an unpatched Espee leader. Alas, the Espee unit was removed in Denver.

On my lunch break, I ran up to Broomfield to see what progress was being made on the siding extension to the north. As you can see here, a gang is working at the (new) north end of the siding. Rumor has it a track gang is showing up to get to work on laying track. That makes sense as I saw two track tempers being unloaded from a flat bed truck as I was leaving to head back to the office.

BNSF runs a daily manifest (each way) between Denver, CO and Laurel, MT. On this particular July afternoon, a trio of GEs leads the northbound version of the train out of the siding at Broomfield. The train has a warrant as far as MP 38, south of Longmont. Before it gets there, however, maintenance (currently on the tracks) will clear up and the train will be able to continue north toward Cheyenne (its next crew change location).

There has been a bit of a downturn in rail traffic in the last couple of months, but you can definitely still find leasers around, particularly on BNSF. These interesting (not necessarily colorful, as they are mainly gray) units, leased from CitiRail, are always fun to find on a train. Not sure how much longer their lease will last!

The southbound Valmont coal empty heads south alongside Midway Blvd on the approach to the north siding switch of Broomfield. It is a beautiful (and hot) August afternoon as Longs Peak stands tall in the distance. The Valmont train has already received a warrant from the Front Range Sub dispatcher to proceed south to Denver (after stopping to align the south siding switch at Broomfield for the main track).
You might think something about this SD70MAC looks a bit strange. I thought so too. The nose looked too orange somehow. Then it hit me...the headlight is above the cab! On every BNSF SD70MAC that I remember seeing (prior to this one), the headlight is on the nose.

This northbound has come to a stop at the north end of the siding of Broomfield. Soon, this will no longer be the north end of Broomfield! The track to the left leads to the Lafayette Branch. If you look closely, you'll see a new switch has been installed on the branch. The diverging route leads to the branch, and the straight route currently comes to a dead end. This will all be a part of the Broomfield siding as the siding is extended to the north. This train, the HDENLAU (Denver, CO to Laurel, MT) is waiting for the southbound Valmont coal empty.
