At the south switch of Irondale, this westbound manifest just got a clear signal and, in true General Electric fashion, the trio of C44-9Ws is putting on a show! Note the nine flat cars carrying tanks. I was guessing they might be headed for Fort Carson, but I'm not sure.

At Brush, CO, BNSF trains either head east on the Akron Subdivision toward Chicago or northeast on the (rest of the) Brush Subdivision. Coal trains use the Brush Sub to head toward the Power River Basin in Wyoming. This coal empty is just a few miles north of Brush running on an approach signal.

Two ES44AC's in the New Image scheme lead an eastbound coal empty stopped on the siding at Wiggins. A westbound coal load has an H2 SD70MAC flying back on the main track. After the coal load clears, BNSF 6069 will get a clear signal to continue east.

BNSF's Brush Sub dispatchers sets up a very well-timed meet as a coal empty (BNSF 6069) pulls toward the east end of the siding as a coal load (BNSF 9857) starts to accelerate on a clear signal on the main.

Just a few miles west of Fort Morgan, the daily Z-Train from Denver to Chicago is approaching the siding of Bijou on a yellow signal. An SD40-2 and a GP60M are the power for the 42-car, 4166-foot-long train.

Green and cream SD70MACs are still pretty common on coal train on BNSF, but it isn't very common to find five such units on a single train! The last four units here are idling, apparently in a power move. UP does this quite often, particularly on the Moffat, but I haven't seen it on BNSF very often.

About 20 miles northeast of Denver, this coal empty is taking the siding at Tonville for a meet with a westbound. The train may appear a bit overpowered, but only the first three units on the train are loading. The last three are idling and just along for the ride!

With a fresh crew on board, this coal empty is leaving from "Coal 2" at 31st Street. The train has a total of nine units (seven on the point and two on the rear), but only the first three on the head end (and the two on the end) are actually loading.

The QCHIDEN typically runs twice a week from Chicago to Denver, arriving in Denver in the afternoon (when all goes according to plan). Here, the train is on the approach to Sand Creek with a nice set of power on the point. An SD75I in Warbonnet on an SD70MAC in Green and Cream lead the train. The train will ultimately make its way to Rennicks where the double stacks can be unloaded.

The twice-weekly (give-or-take) QCHIDEN is in the process of setting out a string of about 20 loaded auto racks at Irondale. An SD75I - with a very nice Warbonnet scheme - leads up the train. The conductor on the ground is preparing to cut the units away from the auto racks.

The westbound California Zephyr is running nearly eight hours late as it approaches the east end of 31st Street. An unfortunate accident in the Chicago area on BNSF resulted in a fatality. Amtrak was delayed due to the resulting NTSB investigation.

An eastbound coal load meets a westbound coal empty at the siding of Tonville along I-76 northeast of Denver. The last DPU'd unit is a blue CEFX leaser. It was a busy afternoon on the Brush Sub, with Amtrak 5 running nearly 8 hours late and entering the picture soon after this shot.

After meeting a coal empty and the HDENGAL (Denver to Galesburg, IL) manifest, it is this coal loads turn to pull out of the siding at Irondale and head into town. Once in Denver, the crew on this train will be relieved and another crew will take it south on the Joint Line.

For several weeks, this New Image SW1500 was working out of BNSF's 31st Street on various switch jobs. Looks like its time in Denver is up as the switcher was the third unit (and DIC - Dead In Consist), headed for Galesburg, IL.
