The train is coming out of the station using the passenger lead, the same track Amtrak uses in the evenings. These were some of the last units delivered to Burlington Northern in the Cascade Green scheme. For nearly 18 years, they kept their numbers in the 9200's. And it will probably be many years before it is again. Several railroads (including Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, the Ski Train and Amtrak) have trains in town for the Democratic National Convention. The train arrived around mid-day (while the Ski Train was up in Fraser) for the Democratic National Convention. A UP bus is also visible in the distance on the right side of the picture. Upon reaching Denver, the crew tied the train down at the south end of Rennicks Yard where it waits for a fresh crew to take it south on the Joint Line. And, interestingly, four of the five units models are unique and each of the five units is wearing a different paint scheme! First up is an SD70ACe in KCS Retro-Belle paint. Next is an AC4400CW in KCS Gray pint. Third is a typical BNSF Dash-9 in Heritage II. Fourth is a beat up Warbonnet C40-8W. Last but not least is a very new SD70ACe in the New Image scheme. After a good run up the hill from Denver, the train has to meet some maintenance equipment at Troublesome before continuing to Kremmling for a crew change. After the MoPac/UP merger, Rio Grande actually gained trackage rights to Kansas City on the MoPac line from NA Junction. After the UP/SP merger, UP sold the line to short line railroads and it is hardly used today. BNSF train, however, use the former ATSF line (now the Pueblo Sub) to make it to La Junta.
