The train was rerouted due to flooding in the mid-west. The reroute definitely added some time as the train comes west into south Colorado from Kansas, north to Denver, east toward Fort Morgan, north into Nebraska, then west into Wyoming! The fuselage for a 737-800 rests on a flat car as it is transported from Wichita, KS to Seattle, WA. Typically these trains run through Nebraska, but recently flooding resulted in a re-route up the Joint Line and Brush Sub in Colorado. The final assembly of the planes takes place in the Seattle, WA area. So how do those fuselages get there? By train of course! Consequently, a lot of trains are being rerouted on different lines. The HKCKPAS (Kansas City to Pasco, WA) has been rerouted through Colorado. Headed for the Wildcat mine on the Utah Railway (near Helper, UT), this coal empty sports a brand new SD70ACe on the point. Roughly once each month, BNSF runs this 75-car coal train west to load on the Utah Railway at the Wildcat Mine near Helper, UT. The train typically makes an early, pre-dawn departure from Denver. The train is actually jointly operated, being run by BNSF up the Joint Line and west on the Moffat to Grand Junction where it is turned over to Utah Railway. A Utah Railway crew takes the train to Utah Railway Junction (near Helper) where the train is then taken on Utah Railway tracks past Martin up to the Wildcat mine. It was set out on the house track near the east end. This is a look at the front of the unit. The coupler looks a bit banged up and the plow is definitely bent up. Cars that could not be rerailed were pushed to the sides of the track. BNSF then laid "panel" track and got the line reopened. At this point, there is a 25 MPH slow order through the derailment site. Both units fell on their sides (the side shown here) when the Longmont Turn derailed three days earlier. In addition to being covered in dirt, it looks like both units have suffered some bent metal and some cracked windows. Seems like both units should return to service though.
