If Amtrak does not back off its plan to reduce service, then the Zephyr is going to go from a daily train to a thrice-weekly train starting in about two weeks. That is 1-2 fewer than is typical in the summer season. Now, as we move in to the fall season, the Zephyr has been reduced to only six! A lot of times, the manifests between Denver and Grand Junction can attract some older power. Today, however, the train has an SD70ACe, and ES44AC, and an ET44AC on the trip east. They had instructions to pick up the bathtub gondola from the coal train that had its bottom sheered off a few months ago. However, they could not pick it up because the car is currently chained (and locked) to the house track rail. They did not have the key to unlock it. So, the pickup was skipped. The train has quite a bit of coal up front, which is somewhat typical these days. Rather than running a lot of unit coals trains, a lot of coal is often included on the MGJNY for the trip east. An early winter storm came through, putting down a few inches of snow on September 8 and 9! The coming forecasts shows ever flake of this snow will be gone within 48 hours as temperatures look to rise back in to the 80°Fs. Meanwhile, passengers on the Zephyr enjoy it all as they head west. Two weeks before the end of summer and the westbound Zephyr makes its way west through a few inches of snow after a very early winter storm the day before. The Zephyr is just about on time as today it is running as Train #1105 (instead of Train #5). It departed Denver two hours later than normal to accommodate UP maintenance. Leave it Colorado to come up with crazy weather. In a 16 hour period earlier this week, the temperature dropped from 95°F to 32°F. Several inches of snow fell when there are still nearly two weeks left in summer. Not even fall yet and you get a unique scene like this. Winter blew in quite early this year, as several inches of snow fell the day before. It is still a chilly, overcast scene today as AMTK 145 leads the Zephyr west out of Tunnel 1. This heritage unit represents my personal favorite paint scheme of any Amtrak has had. This is the Phase III scheme which was used from the early 1980s until the mid-1990s. These cars have been sitting on the siding here at Eisele (Clay) for about a week. The siding has been out of service while the cars have been here. The empty is passing by a work train that has a single unit with 10 gondolas. Many of the gondolas are filled with tied plates, used to secure the rail to ties. After this 7,700-foot empty passes by, the work train will back out of the east end of Eisele all the way down to the siding at Rocky. At first glance, it would be easy to think there are two trains in this shot. But it is indeed just a single coal empty, stretching from the east switch of Eisele (Clay) down to just west of the west switch of Rocky. This coal empty, which has 143 cars and is just over 7,700 feet long, stretches from Big Ten Loop down through Little Ten Loop near west Rocky. The cars are headed for Provo, UT.
